Would anyone like to suggest any ideas? I've been studying C/C++ for a while now, and I'd like to start on a small project. Problem is, I'm not sure what to start on.

Pick a project; perhaps something on freshmeat.net and just find something wrong.

Lots of projects have a janator list- wine's got a lot of low hanging fruit that anyone who's got a passing familiarity with C ought to be able to fix.

You'll learn a lot more working with someone else's code than you will learn looking at your own.

Read some of the listings on rentacoder etc. You don't have to apply for any, just use them for ideas.
