Web image size (3)

Okay this isn't really a coding question but it's tangentially related to HTML/CSS so I think it fits in better here than the general tech support board.

How big would you say is too big for a background or title image in a website? I have one that's running about 500kb and I can't compress it any smaller without it looking like crap. To me 500 seems way too big but maybe I'm just showing my age and it doesn't really matter with people's hyper fast connections these days?

I personally wouldn't have a background any larger than 280 kB

>>2 Yeah in the end I got it down to about 1/2 the size by separating it into two differently compressed images, one for the small high-detail part and one for the rest. Worked surprisingly well actually.
