Really? I haven't been to that many airports, but I assumed things like shoes were federal TSA policies that individual airports couldn't affect.

I've seen it at least 3 different US airports. (One was Seattle, can't remember the other two.) After googling it seems they can sometimes replace the shoe-requirement with dog sniffing.

https://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2016-06-24/shoes-on-feet-laptops-in-bags-tsa-now-waves-passengers-around-body-scanners

Unfortunately people are so used to removing shoes and laptops, the TSA agents had to be constantly shouting "LAPTOPS STAY IN YOUR BAG, SHOES STAY ON." It seemed to ultimately be faster though.

I'm curious how many speakers of Pidgin actually find this more readable than proper English. First of all, Pidgin English is an oral language, nobody learns to read Pidgin. If anybody has learned to read, they've learned English or some other standardized language. I especially don't see the point of using transliterated spellings ("dem" vs. "them", etc.) considering that anybody who has learned to read would have learned the "proper" spelling.

Second, Pidgin is not standardized. It's a mix of English and local languages, so there are quite wide variations depending on the location. It seems that the BBC solves this problem by focusing on Nigerian Pidgin but using only the most common slang words. The result is not really full-fledged Pidgin, more like English with Pidgin grammar and transliterated spelling. They estimate that 75 million Nigerians speak Pidgin, but how many of those actually want to read this watered-down Pidgin?

Also, these article titles made me giggle:
"Why dem dey call Hurricane human being name"
"Ghana import 30 million condoms but dem no use am"
Then I remembered that proper English article titles are often just as stupid.

Anchorman has a few great one-liners, like "60 percent of the time, it works every time," "well, that escalated quickly," and "I love lamp." But when you actually watch the movie, it's terrible.

I guess most comedy movies are really just 1 minute of funny jokes and 89 minutes of filler.

Hm, it's a typical "Frat Pack" comedy. Gravitates too close to SNL's "we gotta do this live every week, let's just stretch the joke till its thinner than tinfoil" concept. Hardly the first time anyone's made a feature film forgetting that good ones take special advantage of the medium, but perhaps a basis of comparison of how typical comedy films outta Hollywood lately don't seem to hold up.

If you compare it to comedy films of prior decades (the shitty forgettable ones, let's leave the hits out of this), there seems to be a general avoidance of rapid-fire wit, slapstick, visual comedy with practical FX props, being perceived as politically incorrect (not even daring to toy with your sense of it), and jokes too erudite for most people to get. I mean, for my tastes, good riddance to "gross-out" humor and shallow parodies,* but in an era of widespread film piracy and competitive streaming services, this unwillingness to take risks seems like a bad call.

I will say I much dislike Will Ferrell's usual buffoon roles; he's funnier as a straight man and it's an easier sell considering he's 6'3".

  • Friedberg and Seltzer are actually still at it and making cash money, I just don't see them heavily advertised as they were in the 00s.

s2e14, Riker and his dad have some kind of blindfolded kendo duel with giant cotton swabs, a hanging banner in the background says うるさい やつら. Before the match they bow and greet each other in distorted Japanese and the caption says "chanting in unknown ceremonial language", lol. Riker calls out his dad for making an illegal attack with a penalty name that's not actually a word, just pseudo-Japanese gibberish. I am actually 30 years late in noticing this.

There doesn't appear to be a clear consensus. パチ and variations are attested, but it seems the more common manga idiom to have a shooting star alone.

To further confuse the issue, there is that "lol I'm a dope" winking pose where the star is because they're "hitting" their head and that sound is コン or コッ (because it's empty).

What's really hot?
A woman giving in to overwhelming pleasure against her will.
The body conquers the mind.
This situation is most easily accomplished through rape, but I much prefer consensual or semi-consensual situations, such as:

  • Two couples swap partners, but the woman ends up enjoying the other man way more than intended.
  • A woman is pleasured or fucked while trying to focus on some unrelated task like reading the news. At some point she loses her concentration due to the overwhelming pleasure.
  • A woman is on some kind of game show and gets pleasured or fucked as a "punishment" for losing.

Unfortunately these situations are relatively rare compared to straightforward rape, and seem to only really exist in Japanese porn.

I imagine cost and the risk of a failure resulting in radioactive waste showering down would be something preventing this.

Plus doesn't a core of iron or heavier prompt stars to explode because they can't fuse it any more?

  1. we have a LOT of nuclear waste to get rid of, relative to the cost of disposing it by rocket (rocket cargo is insanely expensive by weight)
  2. space is hard, rockets fail catastrophically from time to time, and a single such failure would be unacceptable to just about everybody
  3. there are places deep underground which would be reasonably suitable for long-term containment, but nobody on the surface near those places seems to want to let that happen
  4. breeder reactors produce a lot less waste and the waste they produce is less problematic to deal with, plus they can also help burn off waste, but they're a bit more expensive and most of the people wielding the money choose to be too shortsighted to consider anything past how much it costs to build the reactors, instead of thinking of the down-the-road costs and the ethical responsibility to deal with hazmat properly
  5. because it bears repeating: most of the people wielding the money choose to be too shortsighted to consider anything past how much it costs to build the reactors, instead of thinking of the down-the-road costs and the ethical responsibility to deal with hazmat properly

Kind of, but the amounts we'd be sending into the sun would make no practical difference whatsoever. Consider that the sun isn't pure hydrogen and helium, and like Earth it's made from the leftovers of another dying star, with something like 0.16% of its mass being iron. Given that the sun is about 333000 times as massive as earth, that's 533 earth masses of iron (not including anything heavier) we'd be adding maybe a few million tons to, which is, if you run the numbers, about like dumping a cup of water into Lake Erie. It's comparable to adding a couple yen to the world's GDP. Also, the sun would still have the same amount of hydrogen left to burn, and it wouldn't be any harder to burn it because we'd be changing the sun's radius by an even smaller proportion than its mass.

However, that's all moot because our sun isn't nearly massive enough to explode from a core collapse anyway, it'd need to be 10 times as massive at the very minimum. The closest thing it will have is a series of big thermal pulses as it shrugs off half its mass and turns into a white dwarf some 6-7 billion years from now, which will be pretty to watch (from further away than we are now), and I guess it will be sort of an explosion, but not like what you're thinking.

As well as the excellent practical answers to this question, I would add that disposal (containment) is likely much less a practical issue than a political issue. People with large stakes in much less efficient (and safe) forms of energy like to make a lot of noise and grease the pockets of the people who make decisions about things in which they are very much not experts.

For the first time in years, I caught a rat and this one went out of its way to impress me with its species' will to live. It was caught by the nose, like it knew it was dealing with a trap and just gingerly trying it, ready to back out when the inevitable happened... but it was just a little too late. That animal was fighting the trap, willing to twist off its own snout to get out, breathing in blood the whole time. This had to be going on for hours by the time I found it and shot it.

It makes you wonder how long it would have made it without most of a face. Long enough to have hundreds of offspring? Probably. I'm not entirely confident of our species' ability to win against this. We have the upper hand now, but for how long?

Lately I've been getting a lot of phone calls, sometimes multiple per day, from numbers that I don't recognize. When I answer and say "hello?" the person on the other end hangs up without saying anything. Is it just the NSA checking in on me, making sure I'm where my Google Tracking Device says I am? I don't think I'm particularly worthy of surveilling, I barely even leave the house.

I am here, and I will likely be here without break for the next several days before I leave to go buy groceries, that's all, so please stop calling me at 8 am ok?

It's because she is the queen policewoman and all constables are her offspring. She finds and mates with a king policeman from another county every Boing Season ("Spring" for you yanks). The mating ritual is a complex baton-twirling dance culminating in the male demonstrating that he does not need a firearm to fight crime.

272 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-8804 02:30

No, 3's got that one.

You've got the one that has short front legs so it's leaning forward, and the back is leaned even more forward, and there are 144 thumbtacks glued to the seat and seat back.

273 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-8804 03:05

Also there's a poorly grounded heavy electric motor with an off-center flywheel attached under the seat so that not only does the chair vibrate causing the thumbtacks to keep digging into your ass and back, but now and then there are cripplingly powerful electric shocks.

And finally, it's painted a sad shade of pink pastel.

I know what you mean. It makes me sick when I see how the mainstream media superhumanizes autists at the expense of actual autists. Why can't they just be depicted unsupplemented? It's absolutely condescending, and normal people think they're being Good People for being sympathetic to tasteless depictions of autists like on Big Bang theory. Like, don't they understand that autists are literally incapable of feeling empathy? But they depict the characters like they aren't mentally impaired, but rather putting up a facade, and, deep inside, they actually are empathetic people--as though those attributes are necessary for being a good, functional human being. Just obnoxious.

Hi, I'm a bank. If you want, you can pay me $20 a month and I'll hold your money for you. Anytime you need some of your money you can come to my house and ask for it and I'll give it back to you, but only in increments of $20 up to $500 at a time, and only if it's between 10 am and 4 pm Monday through Thursday. Also, I'm going to take your money and go gambling with it. If I win I'll keep everything I win and if I lose then the government will use your tax money to pay you back most of the money that I lost for you. It's up to you of course, but if you don't agree then you'll never be able to buy a car or house, rent an apartment, pay any of your bills, buy food or clothing, or be paid by your employer. Also my house is always 3 degrees too cold.

Amateur code porter here with quite a few (shitty, amateur, low-effort) ports going back many yonks: I still never know what will break when (e.g.) recompiling a bog-standard cross-platform-library-using program. Hate to say it, but you're best off leaping instead of looking and sometimes risks will not pay off, or not easily. Them's the breaks.

Unsurprisingly, the best written and/or most self-contained code tends to present the fewest problems in this respect. Something like an indie-scale game or even a dynamically recompiling emulator (well, for the same target architecture) tends to be more portable than one might suspect; that part is mostly "code is code" and I'm surprised by how well that tends to work out despite that the internal logic itself may be a buggy piece of shit--it's the same buggy piece of shit, but programmers aren't usually out to write endian-sensitive code for example.

So, something about the interfacing with the hardware (even indirectly) causes the lion's share of fuckiness and undefined behavior when you're porting things naively. That kind of shit is why games typically haven't dealt well with hibernation modes. Heck, black-box fuckery is why Stallman's been on a multi-decade autistic crusade in the first place.

Naturally, I have not touched on GUI code; that tends to be a high-effort / just deal with wrong-looking stuff issue no matter what you do.

An MMORPG focused on competitive questing - there are only so many bear asses to go around, so you have to fight over them. But then doing a few quests gets you access to a dungeon, which you run in groups with anyone else who's unlocked it. Most dungeons are segmented, so you do more quests to get deeper. There's also a property system with co-ownership, renting, and squatter's rights.

Nanahira is just really prolific, there's definitely better denpa artists but all of them release like 2-3 albums and then are never heard from again while she's usually in something every comiket and usually even every m3. I like her stuff but it gets repetitive after a while.

I like toromi lyrically, it's usually either saccharine to the point of absurdity or couched with double entendres which is classic denpa, but a lot of her songs are just low energy. They need higher BPM or something. For example I like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPXhcrlcQa8 a lot better than the original and all he really did was speed it up. All in all though, the patrician's choice for people who realize denpa isn't just "moe EDM".

ave;new is truly shit tier, luckily they don't seem so active lately.

MMBK is another one that's quite prolific and has a lot of meh releases as well as a lot of good stuff. I like her chiimu work better but Aihara Kaori seems to have vanished off the face of the planet so there hasn't been much of it lately. Koko needs to release more, I really like her voice and style.

Mosaic.wav is great, the soundtrack to gakkou gurashi was really good and fit the atmosphere of the show perfectly. Not much I don't like from them.

I'd add to your list odenpa stajio in the bottom tier, they have some catchy songs but lyrically they pander hard as fuck to the horny lolicon audience and everything is about slippery flat chests or dick jokes.

>>658 The denpa I love, it's usually individual songs I'll listen to over and over rather than particular artists or albums. Nanahira is really prolific but has a few tunes I really adore, though some of her songs seem like plain old j-pop. I'm drawn to the "indieness" of DIY denpa circles but I love dempagumi.inc, they're kind of more mainstream aren't they? Are they? I don't know. When I found out Hyadain wrote some of their songs I was like "ahhh, that makes sense!" I wonder if he wrote my favourite ones? There's a couple of ave;new songs I love but a lot of theirs sound alike.

I saw my ex girlfriend posting in the #MeToo campaign. Thing is, when we first started dating, she told me she had been raped by an ex. I later found out this was a lie. I don't mean to say I figured it out by putting anecdotes and evidence together, I mean, she actually confessed that she had told me that just to get my pity.

Maybe she was genuinely sexually harassed since then. Maybe she's still using the same pity story. Who knows. I'm in a boy who cries wolf situation though, and for all I know, she could be telling pity stories about me by now.

>>843 from my limited experience, Twitter may be cancer, but it's better than Tumblr about keeping people in their own bubbles instead of nearly the whole damn thing being the bubble. So judging from that person's posts, a lot of people in that particular bubble would probably be amenable to the usual /tg/ and 40K chakras even if they were clueless about chans and anonymous posting.

FWIW, I recently got an account for lurking purposes (I want to take up drawing animu style at a later time, might as well weeb out now). Quickly found that Japanese Twitter is less jimmy-rustling than English Twitter in general. Doujin artists and the Pixiv crowd especially tend to treat it like it's their business--it kind of is. So their handles are decent about staying "on brand", though there are plenty of digressions for posts too funny to ignore, random photos of food/pets, and way the fuck too many im@s and FGO screenshots (okay, perhaps I self-selected for people who already draw waifu bait in the first place).

Watching streams of certain writers typing is very frustrating. They seldom get a sentence out without a nasty typo somewhere. This is alien to me. I had to write lots of essay tests in grade school; on one hand, you ran the risk of not covering enough points by not writing enough, and on the other, you ran the risk of going over time and increasing the probability of errors by writing too much. I appreciate that in reality these fellas have no deadline and have to stand behind every word instead of being tested on it, but man, it's annoying.

867 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-8917 02:35

>>866
Do you mean they make typos and don't notice them? Or they make typos and have to backspace to correct them?

I'm definitely guilty of the latter. I notice the typos immediately, but it leads to a lot of wasted time hitting the backspace key, which is annoying. I've tried multiple times to better train myself with typing tutorials, but it seems at this point the bad habit is too ingrained.

I think they do notice them; it's hard to ignore red underlines. It's more like, they go back to correct it and get it wrong again. Knowing they're probably not dyslexic, knowing they get it right in the end, and knowing their blog or whatever is making them a pretty penny, it's as shocking to me as hearing a professional musician fumble over the same note.

Now, I'm sure I'm just being an easily rattled assiduous ass here; I don't mean to tread on people's difficulties. As I understand it, professional published writing is full of writers who can't in the least be trusted to not have a copyeditor.

As regards your habits, I for one do whole-word deletions when I typo; I would lose my context if I can't re-read my sentence correctly, but I don't easily lose the idea. I'm sure it's the opposite for many people, who accordingly should plow on through and go back later. That's probably more efficient for the kind of writing where you'd have to re-read everything anyway. However, I'm a shitposting reprobate who has to hit "send" within minutes or die trying.

I often feel myself making a typo because it just doesn't feel right compared to when I usually type the word. Ctrl-shift-left and just starting the whole word again (no need to hit backspace at all) is always faster than trying to backspace to the exact wrong letter and attempting to restart typing mid-word.

874 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-8917 16:29

I make typos pretty much per sentence too, particularly if I'm on a deadline and writing fast. I usually feel when my finger presses the wrong key though, so I know I mistyped something before even glancing at the screen and I'm quick to delete everything.

It is for me on a full-sized keyboard too, but not so much on a laptop keyboard. I don't exactly know why I go for ctrl-shift-left instead of ctrl-backspace. Could be that you get to see the highlighting telling you what word you're about to delete (also making it easier to locate the cursor if you zoned out while typing), or because so many textareas on shitty windows programs insert ASCII DEL (127) instead of removing text with ctrl-backspace. Either works, but the main time saving method for me is starting the whole word again instead of from wherever the typo is.

>so many textareas on shitty windows programs insert ASCII DEL (127) instead of removing text with ctrl-backspace

Ugh. One of the biggest reasons I avoid using Windows whenever possible is that so many elements of the basic user experience are so hostile and inconsistent, text editing being a prime example. Not that it's perfect in any other system, but at least there's an effort. Even the simplest Mac apps usually use Apple's text box APIs, and that goes a long way toward the system feeling like a unified system and not a writhing tub of spaghetti code.

I recently switched from a UK-layout to American-layout keyboard and found the experience fun, learning to touch-type slightly differently was enjoyable. But part of it was probably that my new keyboard is a huge improvement over previous keyboards I had used. Also, I still use a mac keyboard at work (which is an ungodly cross between the two layouts, at least in this country anyhow).
While I'm posting about keyboards, I find the numpad essential and any keyboard feels stripped of functionality without it, like I'm trying to interface using a game controller or something. It's the only thing making me hesitate about grabbing a POK3R and having all sorts of fun with custom keycaps.

"And my darling wife, you are here too? The whole family is here at my bedside, then?"

>>924 17 years on and off, including 4 years of high school classes (so more time was spent on conversation than in, say, a college elective sequence, but the material didn't get as advanced). Someone who gets past that level and then really applies themselves (especially with modern learning materials) most likely would get to my level in a fraction of the time. My interests were and are too divided for it to have gone any other way; and I took a bit of a break for the past 5 years while I finished off my long overdue degree and then got stuck on an interminable job hunt... but that'd make a long story longer.

I did translations of nerd shit for a while up to that point, but it was frustrating because I was not building appreciable speed nor learning the language beyond the materials I was translating. Aside from the problem of being buried contextlessly in a dictionary, you end up spending lots of time on the task trying to come up with the phrasing you want in the target language if you really want to do it faithfully, which I did (so with that in mind, my words-per-day pace was surprisingly comparable to a professional despite my lower level of understanding).

There are a lot of differing opinions out there about how to acquire Japanese reading skills. None of them aside from "read a shitload of stuff you're interested in, re-read if you didn't understand, and remember it" really sounds right to me (I've heard it said that Frederick Douglass would circle words he didn't know and get back to them later). Naturally, the kanji present a significant obstacle; people make some ado about how the most common ones make up >90% of usage, but downplay that the rarer ones tend to be distinctive words that comprise the important parts of text: someone's name, a scientific or philosophical phenomenon, exactly what and how someone did something to someone else, etc. Like, you're not going to find an interesting story consisting mostly of "Where is the airport?" "This weekend will be cold and rainy" conversational fluff.

I recently started using Anki to shore up some grammatical vocab. Most people use it for studying kanji, but I've got like 1300 down reasonably solid (reading-wise) from just knowing a few thousand words by sight, so I'm putting that off for now. I expect to be capable of passing JLPT N1 someday, but I wouldn't feel that good at it even then.

let's see, did that album i just downladed get listed under 'c' for 'chie'? no, is it under 'f' for 'fukami'? hmm, still no, maybe it's under '深'? no wait it was under '譁蟄怜喧縺' because the fucking chink who uploaded it mojibake'd everything

>>935 Do you use iTunes? You can set an invisible "Sort Artist" different from the "Artist" field, so for instance it'll show 桃箱 but the Sort Artist is "momo". So can just type momo with the window open and it'll go straight to it. Or, sometimes if I have an anime OP single by one unique artist, the ED single by another, then all the character songs with the CVs listed for the Artist, I'll sort them all as the anime name to keep them all together.

I romanize artist names and autistically re-title songs for that exact reason. It is a pain in the ass and probably not worth it, but I do it anyway.

939 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-8926 18:11

Is there a script to turn kanji and katakana into romaji automagically? I use beets to organize my library and I presume you can extend it through a plugin to add the sort artist tag automatically, which is not a bad idea at all.

940 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-8926 21:13

Kana should be fine and there seem to be plenty of scripts for that online (you could even probably copy/paste the table from wikipedia into a python script and add some commas to make your own), but I couldn't quickly find any for kanji so you'd have to call out to google translate or something and give a confirmation prompt for each translation, because they will all be wrong. Maybe there's a kanji->kana script designed for learners that you can use in 2-step translation

>>939,940
Unfortunately kanji->kana conversion is non-trivial so you need a "morphological analyzer" such as Mecab, Kakasi, or Stakk, and none of them are perfect. It doesn't help that song titles are likely to have kanji with weird readings. What all this really means, >>939, is that you should just stick with today's special.

I miss the old youtube recommendation algorithm that would recommend obscure, thematically unrelated videos. It was a great way to discover strange videos and you could spend a lot of time going down the rabbit hole.

Now the recommendation algorithm is too refined and personalized. There's a lot less variety in the recommendations and they all tend to fit inside a categorical bubble of (actually related videos+your "interests"). The only "surprises" that show up in the recommendations now are shitty videos specifically designed to rank high on the recommendation algorithm using various tricks.
