I don't quite understand why, but I dislike the idea that a career can be something you can "just fall into". Like there are people who doing something to make the bills in college, but instead of making use of their degree, they just continued that job that was getting them by.

>>12 I know a guy who got a bachelor's degree at an art college. When he graduated he went to apply for a job at some kind of advertising agency. They said he was overqualified and turned him down, so he went to the hose factory next door and applied there and got accepted. 40 years later and he's now recently retired from that same hose factory. Such is the absurdity of the career world.

I mean The Aufbau Vereinigung

112 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9024 12:54

The Aufbau Vereinigung (Reconstruction Organisation) was a Munich-based counterrevolutionary conspiratorial group formed in the aftermath of the German occupation of the Ukraine in 1918 and of the Latvian Intervention of 1919. It brought together White Russian émigrés and early German National Socialists who aimed to overthrow the governments of Germany and the Soviet Union, replacing them with authoritarian régimes of the far right. The group was originally known as Die Bruecke (The Bridge). Aufbau was also the name of a periodical it brought out.[1]

According to Michael Kellogg,[2] the Aufbau Vereinigung was a vital influence on the development of Nazi ideology in the years before the Beer Hall Putsch of 1923 as well as financing NSDAP with, for example, funds from Henry Ford. It gave Hitler the idea of a vast Jewish conspiracy, involving a close alliance between international finance and Bolshevism and threatening disaster for mankind.[3] Recent research on Hitler's early years in Vienna (1905-1913) appears to have shown that his antisemitism was at that time far less developed than it became under the new influences.[4]

113 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9024 12:55

He was the father of Russian-American author Vladimir Nabokov. He was murdered in Berlin on 28 March 1922 by far-right Russian monarchists.

114 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9024 12:55

Nabokov was born in Tsarskoe Selo, into a wealthy and aristocratic family. His father Dmitry Nabokov (1827–1904) was a Justice Minister in the reign of Alexander II from 1878 to 1885, and his mother Maria von Korff (1842–1926) was a Baroness from a prominent Baltic German family in Courland.

I'm making no assumptions about how you use a desktop computer, just that it's statistically unlikely that we do the same things, given how many things you can do using a computer. Thus, there's not much point point arguing which is more usable, especially as "usability" is often dominated by what you're used to using.

>>188
This is my point. Usability is completely subjective, save for the obviously user-hostile things Apple seem to love doing to their hardware lately.

Nobody uses desktops anymore, aside from neckbeards. Laptops are the only relevant computers these days. I've built numerous desktops, and still have a pretty high-end one. But I almost never use it compared to my MacBook because I can't take it with me anywhere. And even if the hardware is better, Windows and Linux suck as desktop OSes. macOS is really the only viable native developer platform these days. If you really need something else, you can always run a VM. But I rarely use other desktop OSes these days, even virtualized. But these days, I'm more likely to use a Docker container than a VM.

Why are people so obsessed with having a lot of free RAM?

My desktop has 32GB of RAM and my laptop has 8GB. That's not even counting swap/pagefile. It's not a big deal. Not everything has to be ultra-minimal. Usability and workflow are more important. I can also spin up servers on AWS or Heroku with whatever resources I need. Elasticity is an important aspect of cloud. Cloud is an important aspect of computing. Not everything is offline. You can use remote resources too, you know.

What IDEs can you use in Linux? What dev tools? vim and emacs are ancient and irrelevant. It's 2018. Software has changed, but the Linux development workflow really hasn't changed to meet modern needs. A lot of important software isn't available for Linux. Then you have to either use WINE, a VM, or a web-based version of something. Or even worse, "cross-platform" "native" Electron wrappers for web apps.

Tons of Unix-like stuff is available for macOS, like brew, coreutils, moreutils, bash, zsh, git, and so on. But macOS also has something that Linux does not: commercial software support. I'm not a freetard and I value usability over muh freedums. And Xcode is Mac-only. Complain about it all you want, that's just how it is.

The fact of the matter is that you can't make iOS apps in Windows or Linux. That's a huge deal-breaker to me.

I am using "desktop" to be synonymous with "laptop" here, as you can comfortably put a laptop on a desk. Can you make some actual arguments instead of baseless assertions? That would help your "not a troll" case.

Baseless? Read my posts instead of being dismissive.

No serious developers use Windows unless they're doing Windows-only stuff (i.e. C# .NET). Who uses Linux for development? Maybe kernel developers. But look at what's happening to Linux lately. systemd is straight up garbage.

Most developers I know use MacBooks. But you can run Windows or Linux on a MacBook if you really need to (though you probably don't need to). Are you going to run macOS on a non-Apple laptop? Hackintoshes are a pain in the ass and you also have to trust random kernel extensions to get it to work. Besides, updates can break Hackintosh builds. Too much time and effort. Not worth it compared to just buying a MacBook.

I never said "PC vs Mac" because Macs are personal computers, and they're all x86 anyway. So you can easily run Windows on a Mac. But you can't easily run macOS on a non-Mac computer.

Go outside and see what people are doing. They're not just spending time out and about. They're checking their phones every 5 minutes. Mobile is a big deal. If you're not doing mobile development, what are you doing? iOS and Android are what you should be targeting first and foremost. Android Studio is multi-platform, but Xcode is macOS-only. Sure, you can do CLI stuff in Swift on other OSes, but you still can't use Xcode, Interface Builder, etc. iOS development is way more than just pure Swift.

Desktops are a thing of the past. Web is inferior to native (though still important in some ways). Laptops are dying off and being replaced with phones and tablets (except for developers, since Android and iOS are not viable platforms for developing software on them, unless you count "hello world" programs as being software development). But even so, mobile is overtaking traditional desktop platforms. I use macOS to make Android and iOS apps. If you need to target other platforms, just go with web or Java or something otherwise multi-platform as a kind of catch-all (React Native or Electron or something). But I'd say it's a waste of time to do platform-specific work if it's not for mobile.

Nowadays, you need to develop software for mobile FIRST. Mobile-first web development, with responsive design for desktops second. Mobile apps before desktop apps.

The average mouth-breather uses Facebook and an iPhone or an Android phone, and barely even knows how to use that stuff, as easy as it is. You and I can use computers, but most people prefer mobile platforms, since they're more idiot-friendly and casual/accessible. And if more people are using these platforms, you need to focus your attention on them.

Windows is a sinking ship. Satya Nadella is shifting Microsoft away from Windows and more into cloud and machine learning. Office 365, Azure, and whatever their TensorFlow competitor is called.

Amiga used to be #1 in personal computers. But they didn't adapt to market changes and they died. Microsoft didn't take mobile seriously, and now they're at a huge disadvantage for doing so. Technology changes rapidly, and if you don't adapt, you die. It's that simple. Whether or not you like the changes doesn't matter.

Mobile is like Eternal September on steroids, but even so, you can't ignore it.

RAM is cheap.

Ask any normal person what they think is more acceptable: obsessing over optimizing RAM usage in Linux on an old computer, or using a MacBook. They're not as expensive as you might think, by the way. You can get a lightly used MacBook Air in great condition, with 8GB of RAM and an i5 and an SSD, for like $700. That's not expensive for a laptop. They also get great battery life. And, you know, macOS.

Why do Windows gamer dudebros think it's okay to spend $500 on a graphics card alone, but they think a $700 MacBook is overpriced?

Have fun with desktop Linux. I'm sure you get great software support and no bugs.

Let's face it, Linux is better suited for servers, routers, and IoT devices. Not laptops and desktops. Sure, Android is based on Linux, but that's not a good example of it. Android is laggy compared to iOS when you consider the specs of the hardware Android phones run on. Lots of opportunities for better optimization.

Have fun staying in your bubble and not thinking critically about anything. There are plenty of opportunities you could take up to learn more and think about things in ways you haven't thought of before, but instead you'll just be rude and pass it up. That's not how you listen to people.

I used to use desktop Linux distros too, but they are just not usable for daily driver stuff. After a while, you sort of develop Stockholm Syndrome about it, but if you are able to move past that like I did, you can realize that you don't have to put up with all the problems and lack of support. You can move to something better, like macOS.

But some are less terrible than others.

I think we all at least agree that ChromeOS is shit. Google data mining, browser only, nothing useful. You can chroot Linux in it, but the performance sucks, and only certain distros are supported. And it's ARM Linux, not x86 Linux, so not everything works with it.

Computers in general are just awful.

I used Linux for years at work for embedded development. At the time there was basically no better platform for what we were doing and I loved it despite its quirks. It's totally fine for a desktop OS unless you must have that platform-specific program. My next computer will likely be a Linux box.

For laptop I'm definitely MBP all the way. It's by no means perfect, and yes, Apple is trying pretty hard to sabotage it, but it's still the best laptop experience overall. For me MacOS feels like home, although I get if it doesn't for you. I don't use it to develop for iOS, I just like it. When I need to run not-MacOS I fire up a VM and life is good.

The Windows UX has been utter torture from day one and has marginally improved in the last few years. I feel about it the same way a lot of people feel about PHP: it's just a fractal of bad design. I can appreciate that it's the universal desktop OS and necessary if you need to run certain software. For instance, I'm going to have to spend some quality time with it in the not-too-distant future for work. But that's the only reason I ever touch it.

Mobile...eh. Yes, there's money developing for it, but eh. You want it, you can have it. There's more than enough money developing for other things, and there always will be.

Broke: Thinking globalist elites all get along and cooperate for a single agenda.

Woke: Realizing that there are many wealthy people with power and influence, and they don't all necessarily get along. They still try to control the world in different ways (i.e. bribing politicians or buying media outlets) but they are often working against each other rather than some silly conspiracy involving clandestine meetings where they all get along somehow.

I call it ``warring elites theory'' but I doubt that I'm the first person to come up with this idea

Linux for embedded development makes sense. I mean, the embedded systems you were developing for were probably running Linux, right? Or are you so old that you were doing shit for proprietary dinosaur shit like VxWorks?

Nowadays, embedded is being rebranded as IoT, isn't it? Like traditional embedded systems, but with more connectivity (and thus more security concerns).

But that being said, not everyone is an embedded systems developer, so it's not great for everything.

I'm also a fan of commercial software, which is often proprietary. I'm not a freetard. I'm not the kind of guy who can just use vim and gcc and rxvt for development. I need real IDEs and shit. Old people might call me casual, but whatever.

The Linux DE experience is really lacking when compared to macOS, or even Windows. A lot of Linux users see it as a rite of passage to spend a lot of time to configure their tiling window manager or desktop environment with spinning cubes or whatever. It's been a while since I used a linux distro for myself, though I recently installed Ubuntu for someone else (because they were prone to getting malware in Windows because they sucked at using computers), and Unity wasn't that great. It seemed clunky and less polished than the UX experience I'm used to on Windows and macOS. Everything about it seemed off-brand.

Doesn't EmacEclipse work just fine on Linux? But I get your point, software for Linux is often less polished.

I think that might mainly be due to force of habit. But to be honest, the only use of a DE is to launch useful software or sort files around.

I have never used MacOS so I'm just talking out of my butt, but I do not see major reasons to prefer one desktop environment to another nowadays. In my opinion, small differences are being vastly blown out of proportion by people raised on this or that DE, with no real arguments to support it, only because adapting to a slightly different environment represents a small cost for an even smaller gain.

Also, spending time ricing up your DE is just a hobby or an attempt at impressing ladies, not something anyone does for efficiency or comfort purposes (outside of delusion). If it were really for that goal, they would just use a standard DE, slap on a few hotkeys and be done with it.

>>210

> I used to use desktop Linux distros too, but they are just not usable for daily driver stuff. After a while, you sort of develop Stockholm Syndrome about it, but if you are able to move past that like I did, you can realize that you don't have to put up with all the problems and lack of support.

This is actually the real deal breaker about Linux.

Talking like someone who does mobile development for a living and thus uses an MBP all day at work, it's garbage. It's filled with small crap like lack of cut and paste on the finder which is trivially fixed in Linux, but unworkable on mac OS. Updates fucking hijack your computer for 15 to 20 minutes, that's unacceptable in 2018, and you need to update it for practically every two Xcode updates or so. The whole fucking computer. To run the latest Xcode.

Hey, some idiot updated the test device to an iOS beta? Boy oh boy, now I'll have to download 18GBs of a TRASH IDE just to get the development image.

Mobile development is garbage. Android Studio is crap, except when compared to other Java IDEs. Xcode is the worst shit imaginable and UIKit crashes DAILY. Indexing on Xcode has been broken for 5 releases now, I have to restart that shit twice a day. Mobile p2p fintech solutions for ios and android are garbage ideas. Every uber-but-for-tater-tots idea man can suck my balls. Every mobile dev candidate is absolute trash and the whole field is polluted by amateurs who barely finished high school.

Fuck you.

Hey remember when Xcode froze for minutes when displaying filename tooltips on the file explorer? It was there for like 3 major releases. That's pretty much 2 years with Xcode freezing to a halt if I dared resize the left pane. That's what you get with enterprise quality software. Thanks Apple.

As an aside, if you're dragging files in the finder:
Holding down cmd moves them (ie deletes the original if they're going to a different drive)
Holding down opt copies them (leaves the original if they're not going to a different drive)
Holding down both creates a shortcut.

Why does anything exist?

Actually, DOES anything exist?

What is real? What is fake? Is time an illusion?

Is reality an illusion? Is it a simulation?

If things do exist, does there need to be a reason why? Or can things exist for no reason?

On one hand, a good OS should have "move file" be the same operation everywhere, but on the other hand, it would suck if you moved your files over to a thumb drive that promptly caught fire after it deleted the originals, but on the third hand, they probably just haven't bothered to think about the default filesystem boundary behavior they inherited from software from the 70s,

> Why does anything exist?

No reason. It just exists.

> Actually, DOES anything exist?

Yes, obviously.

> What is real? What is fake? Is time an illusion?

We merely call real the parts of ``what there is'' which are (conceptually) solid and durable enough to our taste or easy to grasp. So, physical reality is generally considered more real than dreams. Note that a sufficiently advanced dream could essentially become reality. However, it is usually clear even when dreaming that physical reality forms the basis of dreams.
Time is not an illusion, but the passing of time is. Past and future are not any less real than the present.

> Is reality an illusion? Is it a simulation?

Reality is not an illusion, by definition. Is it a simulation? I don't know.

> If things do exist, does there need to be a reason why? Or can things exist for no reason?

No and yes.

> What is nothingness like? What is death like?

Nothingness does not exist, there is only an idea of nothingness, just like luck does not exist and we only have an idea of what it is.
As for the experience of death (beyond the moments of transition), obviously when you die you can choose to linger as a ghost, resurrect (for casuals) or create a new character.

I recently went with a friend of mine to see the awful Avengers: Infinity War movie and it was so stupid. Are people getting dumber these days? How can anyone like this trash?

Itfs stupid superhero garbage, but not only that, it had the dumbest dialogue and tons of plot holes too. Why are there stones that can control everything in the universe? Why would they give the stones to the supervillain? They claimed to give the stones to the bad guy to save their friends (like the iron man guy or whatever), but then he killed half of the population st the end anyway, which ended up killing a lot of the good guys too, so it would have made more sense to not give him the stones.

If he could control everything in the universe, why would he kill half the population instead of making more resources and food so that people wouldn't even need population reduction? Why did the bad guyfs chin look so stupid?

Why are there so many of these movies?

On lots of vote-curated sites, you'll find massively positive ratings on comments that call out the putative problems that "this site" has. Pure opinion at best, but usually counterfactual in my estimation.

As best I can tell, this is indicative of a horrible projection/deflection problem in the general groupthink that nobody actually wants to address. That would mean getting off your high horse. Can't have that!

Maybe if you're at an old place going by company culture from the 80s. Coworking spaces and modern startups are often BYOD and people use laptops. Besides, you can use multiple screens on a laptop too. Airplay, Thunderbolt, HDMI, mini-DP, and so on.

You can always remotely delegate workloads to a remote server or desktop in a closet somewhere, but that's not the same as always being at a desktop.

370 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9036 16:29

That's all probably true for "modern startup" silicon valley shitculture where the employees are paid in foosball and the directors are all cheapskates.
No business that gives a shit about data protection and, well, general liability would trust BYOD, and no employee should either, for multiple obvious reasons.

I was the second hire in my company two years ago, so they're not old. They have their own premises, and I get a nice workstation with a real keyboard and 3 bezel-less monitors (more if I want them; the graphics card has some spare slots), and I get to stop caring about my work when I'm not actually working (not as easy when you get given a laptop you can take home). That's not "company culture from the 80s" at all, that's just making my work life tolerable.

I disagree. I actually see more people committing logical fallacies and not as many people pointing them out. They're not even going to bother with pointing out ad hominem or other fallacies. You seem to forget that most people are dumb and mobile devices and apps are easier to use than ever before. I wasn't going to engage this dumbassery but I can't resist any longer. I'm sick of abiding reactionary neoliberal dipshits masquerading as leftists.

If you're an actual leftist and not just a limousine liberal paying lip service to the "inclusionary" ideological zeitgeist so you don't lose your comfy BYOD open office Silicon Valley tech job then ignoring the Jews is dangerous self-deception. The Jews are one of the greatest enemies of international class solidarity out there. No other group spends more time and money lobbying for unrestricted immigration, open borders, busting unions, importing low-skill workers willing to work for next to nothing, all in the name of enriching themselves while further dividing the proletariat along racial lines, suppressing class consciousness. Certainly 100% of Jews aren't such rootless cosmopolitans, but a disproportionate amount of international capitalists are Jews; pretending otherwise is ignoring an uncomfortable truth in the hope it'll eventually just go away.

At some point the "left", once the champions of the working class, figured out they could continue paying lip service to the working class and using their votes to stay in power while in actuality having policy that differs little from the other puppets of international capital who enrich themselves at the expense of the proletariat. Insincere neoliberal ideologues spout charming but meaningless platitudes about how maximum diversity is on the horizon (if this sounds familiar it should) and then wonder why their support is eroding among the working class they used to champion. The brand of condescending proselytizing becoming increasingly popular among the "left" is also annoying at best and dangerous at worst. At best, you make an obscure yellow fever anime messageboard that's already been dying a slow death since 2009 slightly shittier. At worst, you actively convert the working class away from their own best interest and toward right-wing populism when they rightfully bristle at your inept lecturing and mother-knows-best attitude and purposely go looking for "whatever the opposite of what that guy says."

Are you seriously getting mad that I'm calling someone out for being antisemitic? You're just trying to change the subject. ((())) is an antisemitic dog whistle. Quit trying to change the subject.

>>422
((())) serves no purpose other than to mean "I think this person is Jewish" and it's used in a negative context. It's ridiculous that there are people who justify this. Sometimes, people use it in their Twitter name to show that they're an enemy of alt-right racists, but that's the only time when it's not racist. But in this thread, it has been used in a racist manner.
You have no self-awareness.

>>423
Yeah, I'M the one in an echo chamber. Not the people who are trying to normalize antisemitism. Okay.

>>424
I wouldn't even describe myself as a leftist. Do you think anyone who disagrees with you is a leftist? You know who's the biggest supporter of Israel? It's certainly not the democrats. Leftists tend to be in favor of Palestine/Gaza rather than Israel. Leftists are often antisemitic, which is funny considering that they pretend to be the party of tolerance and progress.

I really shouldn't even be responding to someone who is unironically racist, but here's what I have to say about these conspiracy theories about Jews:

The flaw with a lot of alt-right conspiracies is that they assume all power is completely consolidated in the world. It's true that there are a lot of rich and powerful people. But there are actually quite a lot of billionaires now, and new ones are popping up a lot now, especially in America and some developing countries (lots of income inequality now). But the fundamental flaw in alt-right thinking is that you think all rich and powerful people are having clandestine meetings and getting along and making plans together. In reality, there are many different ideologies among the elite and they don't always get along. Not all rich people get along.

You want a simple and easy explanation for complicated issues. It's intellectually lazy to tell yourself that Jews are behind everything. In reality, Jewish people are just like everyone else. I have Jewish friends and I've even dated a Jewish girl before. The real problems in society are with extremely rich and powerful people. There are rich and powerful people from all different backgrounds, and guess what? They don't all get along, don't all have the same religion, and aren't all from the same place in the world.

You get confused with confirmation bias because some shitty /pol/ images pick and choose a few Jewish people but ignore all of the non-Jewish people who are also global elites who serve their own best interests.

Billionaires are powerful and control the media. But not all billionaires are Jewish, and not all billionaires get along. There is no global conspiracy. Occam's Razor and all that. Peter Thiel isn't Jewish. Dr. Dre isn't Jewish. Bill Gates isn't Jewish. Xi Jinping isn't Jewish. Putin isn't Jewish. I could go on and on. There are plenty of people who are absurdly rich and/or powerful who have nothing to do with Judaism.

At the end of the day, people want to be happy. Money can help with that. People want to be powerful. Money can get you power. Powerful people can buy politicians or media outlets. But there is no single person or single group that controls everything. Instead, there are a lot of powerful rich people who control different portions of the media or politics.

But I bet you're not open to listening to ideas that don't back up your preconceived notions. You're either going to ignore me or just double down on your incorrect views.

And to further clarify: I am not Jewish, I am not antisemitic, I am not a social justice warrior, I am not a leftist, and I am not alt-right. I'm not a centrist or a neocon either. It's almost as if there are more stances than that, and not all opinions can be summed up in some twitter bio-sized label!

What I meant to ask is how covering a cover song even works. Who receives payment for such a thing. Also how frequent is that? I mean I know there's jazz standards and stuff, but like in pop and rock music, is there such an effort to further transform songs into unrecognition?

I used to know someone in a cover band. I don't think they ever gave royalties to the real band. But then again, they were only a local gig and didn't get really famous or anything.

I think Chuck Klosterman had an interesting perspective on cover bands in "Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs" where he said that people do that to piggyback off the fame of the real band and they don't care that they're nobodies who will never make a name for themselves.

Not all cover bands attempt to change the source material. Sometimes, they just try their best to recreate it. I've never heard of a cover song of a cover song, but maybe people who cover Weird Al songs count for that?

I spent half an hour trying to help my baby boomer relative turn their laptop on and type their password in so they could log in, but every single time I gave a simple instruction they managed to mess it up. By the end, they didn't manage to do it. They just gave up and got mad at me. As if I'm to blame for their tech-illiteracy.

Things like "press the power button" and "type your password" and "is the computer turned on already?" and "what's on the screen?" are apparently rocket science to old people. I'm not even kidding. That's what I was trying to help him do, and he COULD NOT DO IT. I explained things many different ways, but he just couldn't figure it out. And he blamed ME.

Think about it though, I'm not just learning how to turn my laptop on and read out the contents of a text box. I'm learning the whole interface of a laptop computer, potentially a completely alien concept and setting, trying to get myself to remember all this stuff, trying to figure out and internalize the connections between all of the inputs and outputs of this machine, and thinking about the actual impending task I have to do once I've figured out how to unlock the damn thing, probably on some sort of deadline. All while being hyper-aware of this person younger than me becoming increasingly irritated that I'm not able to carry out this task that they think a chimp could do.

He spent a lot of the time panicking and getting confused and also making defense comments (trying to justify why he couldn't do it, or trying to blame the computer instead of his incompetence). He seemed partly embarrassed or something that he didn't know how to follow my directions so I think he was channeling his brain power into coming up with excuses why he couldn't do it instead of concentrating on the task at hand.

I think he suffers from an "expert" mindset. He is so old and has had a lot of job experience where people see him as a well-educated person, so he has convinced himself that he doesn't need to learn new things, and it can make someone feel vulnerable or dumb to admit that there's something they don't know how to do well, especially if they consider themselves to be really good in other aspects of their lives. So when he had to admit that he didn't understand very basic computer concepts, I think he was less interested in learning it and instead getting more emotional and concentrating on the debate and "face" aspect of the conversation.

I could be wrong though.

Automation is a widely-used word. Automatization is not.
That reminds me of people who write "defiantly" instead of "definitely." Sure, "defiantly" really is a word. But I don't think it's the word you meant to write.
Just look at the difference in popularity between the two words:
https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?geo=US&q=automatization,automation
Not everything is an insult or attack. It's okay to admit when someone else's correction is right. But I think people have a knee-jerk reaction of defending something no matter what. But that's not how you grow as a person.

So? Neither is incorrect, whereas defiantly is blatantly incorrect and does mean something completely different from what was intended to convey on any dictionary. You're splitting hairs here, yikes man. Note that is is not intended as an insult or an attack. I'm just pointing out that your suggestion, while not without merit, is pointless and not needed, and also completely tangential, while we are at it.

You know what's funny about liberals? They blame Russia for everything and imply that Russians are evil and America is great. But at the same time, Russia is communist, whereas America is capitalist. Yet American liberals say communism is great.

If you like communism so much, live in Russia. But wait, that would go against your "everything is Russia's fault" narrative.

Maybe communism would be good for obese Americans. After all, communism is the most efficient way to lose weight. The only problem is... you just keep losing it until you die. You either die of starvation or get gulag'd or disappeared for being anti-communist. That is the endgame for communist regimes.

Morons who don't study history think communism means everyone will live in an egalitarian utopia. Historically, that has never been the case. It's also the communist party that's elite, rich, and powerful, while everyone else is poor as fuck. That's not any better than our current economic issues. In fact, it's even worse.

You need to come up with realistic plans instead of idealized bullshit that will never work in reality. Communism doesn't work. Just because capitalism is flawed doesn't mean communism is the answer. That's a stupid thing to say. Mao, Pol Pot, Lenin, Stalin -- extreme death tolls under actual communism.

Venezuela is socialist. And just look at how well they're doing. You know another socialist party? Germany's National Socialist party (aka Nazis). Guess what? It didn't work economically (not to mention the other issues).

Socialism doesn't work. Communism doesn't work. Capitalism doesn't work. We need to think outside the box.

VATS is not the equivalent of aimed shots from the isometric games. The equivalent of aimed shots is, aiming at something(eg an enemy's leg) and shooting it. More importantly every single character in the game could do that, VATS is special player character magic. >>515 Language is a beautiful fascinating thing, but it's sad when it's stifled by that kind of mindset. I guess sometimes some people maybe try too hard to sound smart, and that can be a bit annoying, but not as annoying as when someone thinks that's the only reason people use a wider vocabulary. Not as annoying as using "neckbeardy" as an adjective, that made my skin crawl!

It's cool that language is an ever-evolving entity, but semantic drift caused by a large amount of dunderheads misusing words is a personal peeve. It's always been stupid when someone uses the word "literally" just as emphasis or exaggeration rather than its true meaning, but I read they recently added this alternate sense of the word to the dictionary! Don't worry, I'll get over it.

It was apparently 2013 they updated the definition, so not quite as recent as I thought - but the point I was making was that because a word gained enough widespread misuse amongst the dim majority, they just updated the definition to compensate, lowered the bar if you will. Like I said, I love how language is always evolving, it's sad that the driving force in this case is common ignorance, that's all.

Another example, when my friend says "I made the ultimate sandwich yesterday", I know he means he made an amazing sandwich, maybe one of the greatest, but in my head I still always think "I bet he's gonna make another sandwich pretty soon."

There's just no nice way of distinguishing a macro from a function, or figuring out what exactly a macro applies to. At least not with how much/little I've fleshed the thing out.

Nope, that's unified code and data. I wanted to use the same syntax to define a macro and a function (so no defmacro/define-synax, just define), and in the eval phase be able to use syntax functions as if they were normal functions.
Plus I'm writing a stack-based language without GC.

I figured it out though, but you and >>598 are more interested in trying to make yourselves sound clever, so I'll spare you the details.

Dokyun superstar
Wanna succeed, but I won't go far
It's summa
And I wanna...

Snort cocaine with Kurt Cobain
Tryna make friends but I'm going insane
Gettin' paranoid
Call of the void
Losing my shit, wanna blow out my brains

Ayy

Met a new bitch and she's hot as fuck
Take her for a ride in my rusty-ass truck
Wanna defile her
Show her my compiler
While she leans over and gives me the succ

Wrote it myself for an undergrad class
She can't code for shit but she got a nice ass
But realistically though
She's ain't into me, yo
But my feelings will eventually pass

Consumerism is gross, makes me feel unclean
Just another cog in this dying machine
Moral decay
In the US of A
Distract myself wit yet another gay meme

Disaffected youth falling for nihilism
Unwashed masses preferring hedonism
Want to be an ascetic
It's a dank aesthetic
Returning to traditionalism

If society is "progressing" then why are we all sad?
Our modern dystopia is obviously fucking bad
Don't even lie to me
I know you got anxiety
Stop being apathetic -- we need to get mad!

long post no one cares about
doesn't really fit the snarky/curt/lighthearted nature of the site, but I've been drinking

stopped living in the now and I'm living in the past
wondering how long this shit will last

bad memories and introspection
shitty poetry and catharsis
doesn't always have to rhyme

jumped out the window, but it didn't work
just got hurt
broke bones and went to the hospital
feeling absolutely awful
nobody visited me
profound melancholy

closed that chapter in my life
my loser friend now has a wife
not sure how he pulled that off

look at facebook profiles for a while
waiting for my code to compile
macbook fan sounds like a jet
do I regret this purchase yet?
got no game, only options are old flames
dreary look through the yearbook
remember when I made you shook
not anymore
you turned into a basic whore
and I'm a fucking lame developer
now I'm dead to her
parted ways like parted hair
life doesn't need to be fair
congratulations on graduatin'
mista thug isolation

can't get over existential dread
maybe I'd be better off dead
but I'll keep on truckin' anyway
maybe something good will happen one day
not now, but eventually
you and me

miss my old friends
drop acid with you like back in the day
pretend that everything's like how it used to be
but we can never go back

reading books critical of technology
and they really resonates with me
neoluddism is the way to go
manifest destiny

technology sucks ass
social media was a mistake

bills and taxes
in theory and practice
consumed by nihilism and a lack of purpose
buy more, watch more, do less
is this the endgame of society?
using purchasing habits to define your personality
disgusting
mass media is gross too

buy fancy new shit to replace your old tech
but it can never fill the void in your life
your old shit taking up space in landfills
turning flat lands into trash hills

paying off student loan debt
am I there yet?
do I regret it? I think not
an important experience but it costs a fucking lot

no one will ever care
pie in the sky aspirations that went nowhere
the next bill gates? yeah right
making shitty apps to afford a place to sleep at night

the american dream is dead
but the american nightmare has never been more real

apathy is easy and apathy is cool
but sometimes you gotta open up and stop being a massive tool
can't be stoic 24/7

unfulfilling consumerism and modernity
what the fuck is wrong with me
going through the motions
strange emotions

a remote access trojan with persistence via a BIOS rootkit
animals being born and slaughtered just so we can eat and shit
pollute the planet and have our way with it
"here for a good time, not a long time"
destroying the planet is a serious crime

goldilocks conditions for life are very uncommon
and we're throwing that all away so a few people can get rich
while other people starve or don't have access to healthcare
or they're victims of abuse and no one cares
lack of upward mobility means many can't go anywhere

botnet command and control on GitHub Gist
why the fuck does the universe exist?

a rich dystopia is still a dystopia
moral compasses have all but disappeared
people can't debate anymore -- have you been CURRENT YEAR'd?

hanging out with friends but still feeling alone
too many notifications on this stupid ass phone
if you want good friends, you have to be a good friend
can't think of relationships as just a means to an end

I don't know what I'm doing
do you?

Qualities of successful memes:
• Brief
• Simple, but not TOO simple, otherwise it won't be able to generate discussion or interest
• Confident
• Can't take itself too seriously
• Usually can't be too high-effort
• Easy to understand, even without context (though having backstory/context can add more depth to it)
• Accidental or natural, not some forced "please make this into a meme" shit
• Easily changeable (variation on a theme) so people can add their own spin to it -- derivatives are just as important as the original
• Easily repeatable
• No watermarks, generally no credit to whoever made it -- separating art from the artist
• Posted at the right time and place -- where it is matters just as much as what it is
• Can be used as a reaction rather than as a standalone piece of media
Repeatability
• Funny
• Sometimes, something is a meme simply because it pops up a lot. You think it's funnier when you see it more often. Other times, a meme is only funny at first, and then ages like milk.
• Generally, memes have a lifespan. Old memes shouldn't be posted, especially by corporate social media accounts, because then gen Z will think they're trying too hard to appeal to kids without actually knowing how to do it ("how do you do, fellow kids?") -- conjures up images of out of touch executives in a board room discussing how to appeal to demographics they don't understand
• Being related to current events can help in the short term, but it will ultimately decrease the overall lifespan/trending time of the meme, once said event is no longer current
• Small file size -- can't be too horribly compressed, but it can't be so big that it's unable to be posted on major social media platforms
• If it's visual, a square-ish aspect ratio helps, since people use landscape and portrait mode on their various devices these days, so tall and skinny or wide and short only look good on certain screens and rotations, but not all
• Can't be too big or high resolution -- people will be viewing it on small phone screens, so text or objects in the image need to be bold and easy to see, even if people save it and recompress it, adding more JPEG compression
• Having a unique name can help, so people will be able to find it on google if they try to look it up, as opposed to something generic like "that one weird image"
• The audience is never wrong. If you make content and people don't like it, don't blame the people who are viewing it. The fault is with you. Either you're posting it in the wrong place, or it just isn't good.
• It's not good if you have to justify it or explain it. It should be easy to understand and easy to like.
• Being very specific to a small niche, or being offensive, mean that there will be the capability for a small group to really enjoy it, but it has to be more general and inoffensive if you want it to reach mass appeal. Of course, this is the same problem with pop music -- in order to please lots of people slightly, you have to be bland, so nobody gets obsessively into it. Breadth vs. depth.
• Timeless qualities help extend the life of a meme. Technology and politics age poorly and quickly, so they are definitely not timeless.

Bruh you can change default settings like username and password and host binding. You just seem to be parroting what people who know nothing about it say. Yes, itfs not secure by default. But you know what else is like that? Cisco IOS. You actually have to configure it. But guess what? People still use Cisco routers and switches and they donft always get hacked. You know why? They get configured by people who know what theyfre doing.

You can also use Platform as a Service so someone else is in charge of securing your shit. See Heroku. But that would only be if you wanted an online data base, not something local.

Lastly, a fucking local database \ not allowing remote connections at all \ does not need to be secure. You can make it not allow for any remote connections.

wow, that was hard, right? lol no

also if you think mongodb has to be schemaless then I guess you've never used it before

I'm also using SQLite and Django for a separate project but it's cool to use different things instead of being firmly entrenched into only one way of thinking

Just thinking about the time I tried to make friends with this one kinda older woman I knew, and she asked how old I was and said I was too young for her, and she was implying that me trying to hang out with her meant I was hitting on her or something. I told her that wasn't the case but she didn't believe me. She was fat and unattractive and older than me, why did she think I was hitting on her? I was just trying to make a friend.

Do people really have a hard time believing that someone would just want to be friends?

Had some mild pain in my balls about a month ago which I think was actually stress related from my shit job (apparently stress making your balls get super sensitive is pretty common,) freaked myself out over it and thought I had an infection, went to a doctor who ordered an ultrasound, that was the only thing they found.

I'm actually still waiting to see a urologist about it, but considering the pain is completely gone now and I couldn't get an appointment until August, it seems like none of the medical professionals are too worried and I shouldn't be either.

Also, I am now planning to finally quit my job.

There is no such thing as a homosexual person. Only homosexual thoughts acts. We are hardwired to want to reproduce, meaning it's normal to be heterosexual. Just because someone puts ideas in your head doesn't mean you have to base your entire identity around it. I guess you can shove pencil erasers in your ears, but that doesn't mean you were born as a person-who-shoves-pencil-erasers-in-their-ears. But if you hear people say it often enough, you will wrongly think that it's a nature thing rather than a nurture thing.

The media is pushing LGBT stuff hardcore. I wonder why. Maybe it's to decrease the birth rates of native populations in an attempt to get the public's acceptance for mass immigration from third world countries, where people are used to being paid less. The point of mass immigration is to increase competition for jobs, decrease wages, and so on. It really only benefits rich globalist elites who are already rich. People who own businesses. It's a shitty time to be an employee rather than an employer.

Some liberals pretend to support poor people, but they would sooner lash out at low income conservatives than rich elites. Why? Because they have been misled into thinking other poor people are the problem. Divide and conquer.

Meanwhile, billionaires continue to get richer and more powerful.

Jeff Bezos is currently worth over $140 billion. But liberals? They'd rather attack old Cletus over there, with a net worth of $1,500. Because his older culture isn't the same as whatever the mainstream media tells them it should be this month.

979 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9057 00:47

>There is no such thing as a homosexual person

I agree with this in the sense that there is probably no "homosexual" person who is 100% interested in only the same sex with absolutely zero interest in the opposite sex, but I would say the same for "straight" people. Some people have a preference, even an overwhelming preference, for one or the other but I think if they're honest with themselves most people regardless of their preference have SOME condition that would spur them into having sex with someone who isn't their preferred gender. Sexuality, the entirety of it, is a social construct and views of it differ wildly depending on what society you're currently a part of. That's actually kind of a banal and obvious thing to point out, did you think you were breaking new ground or something?

980 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9057 00:53

Anyway as a fag I also kind of resent being made into a token to be used by liberals for political gain. At any rate most of them think cis gay white men are only maybe half a step down from straight white men on the "literally hitler" scale of privilege, which is driving some of them to just go be tokens for conservatives instead which is just as bad tbh. None of them have ever tried "not letting who you choose to have sex with become your entire personality".

I agree about Minecraft somehow losing its magic. I still have fond memories of building a tree house in an earlier version of survival (right after Notch added a giant tree generator.) Those were some good times. I think part of the problem is just Minecraft has been around so long that it's no longer novel. Sure, there's added content but the core game hasn't changed.

We discussed this a bit in a previous current thoughts thread:
