The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi was too unrealistic for me

I mean, when have you ever met a woman with the mental capacity for depression(—JŸT)? That requires a working theory of mind and an IQ above 95, both of which are something no woman has ever possessed in the entire history.

The shobon predates you, it outranks you, and it is certainly more worthy of a seat at the table. The text itself that makes up the shobon shall be seated before you and fed of wine and steak to your scrapped bones and curdled milk. To say another is below you for speaking the shobon when it is itself above you is delusional.

I used to be into dumb shit like anime, and actually /o/ (the auto board) was my first intro to image boards, and then I got into world4ch's /lounge/ and /prog/, and eventually 4-ch and so on, but then I grew up and stopped liking dumb shit like anime. Weeb shit was a dumb phase in my life. I'm glad I'm over that, and I hope you can get over it too. I'm just disappointed that there are still plenty of people who are into this tripe. I want to convert you away from that garbage.

I'm not new, I'm just different now.

I changed dramatically in college. If you had a good education, you'd change too.

19 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9080 18:21

I hope that one day you too, poor plebeian, can stop enjoying things that are fun and become a joyless, proselytizing cunt like me. I really wish people would stop liking things that I dislike! Btw I'm not new, I've been here all summer.

Have you even been to college, dude? If you had you'd totally understand. It's like, totally life-changing, dude.

20 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9080 18:32

Ha! College is for plebs. Let me tell you why I'm superior for NOT going to college. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go back to watching misogynistic anime. Why don't women love me?

22 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9080 18:38

Also I hate to break it to you, honey, but if you went to college in America then you did not have a "good education", unless you went to one of a small handful of extremely elite institutions(you didn't). At best, you took on tens of thousands of dollars in debt to attend a glorified adult babysitting program where they taught you the basic literacy skills that people in the rest of the developed world(I use this term extremely loosely when referring to America) learned for free in what you'd call 'high school'. At worst, you took on tens of thousands of dollars in debt for the privilege of being brainwashed into a useful idiot for the political zeitgeist.

That feeling you're experiencing right now, where you're desperately trying to convince yourself and everyone around you that that was tens of thousands of dollars well spent, is called "post-purchase rationalization".

tl;dr: allahu akbar, death to america and death to whatever you are

Yeah, try and silence people if you dislike them. Great idea. Maybe it's good to surround yourself with people who aren't exactly like you. Ever thought about that?

You do know it's possible to disagree with people without arguing or getting all butthurt about it, right? Instead, people hurl insults and then call someone a troll.

Apparently anyone who isn't into the EXACT same stuff as you is a troll. Great logic there.

34 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9080 19:50

There is something seriously wrong with the board culture here.

Someone said they were planning on killing themselves. So I said they shouldn't do it and made some heartfelt posts trying to talk them down from it. I don't know if it was effective or not.

Now people are calling me a troll because they don't agree with me on everything under the sun. The absolute state of social media.

No, because it's an anonymous board and I don't know exactly which posts you make. What I do know, however, is that you've filled this thread with shit. These rants of yours are an irrational overreaction to whatever it is you feel angered by and I am concerned for your mental well-being.

>you've filled this thread with shit

Yeah dude, telling someone who talks about their suicidal thoughts that they should keep on living is "filling this thread with shit", apparently. Have some empathy. I also think that, being an anonymous site, people have a tendency to confuse which posts are made by which people. So you see my political posts and think that's me, but you don't get that I also make innocuous posts too.

>irrational overreaction to whatever it is you feel angered by

America has serious problems right now. It doesn't make sense to be calm when everything's going down the shitter. Additionally, I think you're overestimating how "angry" I am. And I'm going to assume that you're not American, since if you were, you'd know what it's like here right now.

>I am concerned for your mental well-being.

So you're insulting me and then calling me the troll? Do you not see the hypocrisy here?

Can't we just get along? Enough of this already.

I enjoy hearing about the spread and evolution of net slang across language barriers. For example I remember a Spanish-speaking friend telling me the story of how crossdressers came to be called "little rags" on Spanish-language imageboards. They took the word "trapo", literally meaning "cloth" and punning on the English netslang "trap". That was seen as too 'masculine' so the diminutive -ito was added, ending in "trapito".

"whose likeness and inscription is this?"
The arrogant Pharisee smirked quite jewishly and smugly replied "Caesar's, you stupid Christian"
"Correct. Therefore, render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

Sports are fine. The galaxybrain take is that it's basically just gamified exercise and anything that gets people up off their asses in this modern world is a good thing. It's just that sports reporters and sports journalism are dumb as fuck. I especially like when they interview a player after a game and they ask some dumb question like "What do you attribute your success in today's game to"? And the player has to give some retarded answer that makes them sound like a retard because literally what else is there to say? "Yeah I think I was successful today cause I went out there and swung the bat really hard, and also made contact with the ball". And you can see they want to continue on to say like "Duh? What kind of answer were you even expecting? I literally just walked in off the diamond, at least let me catch my breath before you ask me stupid shit so you can show it on TV later and make me look like a meathead".

Anne frankly, I did nazi that coming. I literally came here to say this but boy, that escalated quickly so to the top with you! Lost it at 'This is why we can't have nice things' and then my faith in humanity was restored, my mind blown, and manly tears were shed. Well said. As a 'murican, I can confirm this gem has just won the internet and is doing it right. Just sayin', I know that feel, bro, and while that was a risky click, this post was a 9/10, 11/10 with rice, would read again. I see what you did there and it feels good man. You magnificent bastard; you, sir, are so brave, a gentleman and a scholar, and seeing how you are a redditor for 4 years, this checks out, so I'll allow it. It's normal to be depressed and anxious when you live in a depressing and anxiety-inducing environment. The problem is the environment itself, not the individual. SSRIs and benzos donft fix your country's culture, healthcare, poverty, etc.

I think this is a huge failure of modern psychiatry (the inability to look at larger-scale issues instead of the individual person).

It's funny how leftists are calling people "bootlicker" now, considering that they're in favor of pro-statist shit like gun control, higher taxation, etc. So they're insulting people for seemingly being okay with authority (i.e. not hating cops just because they're cops?), yet they themselves are very much ok with authority. Just as long as it's their brand of authority. And you can also tell when a liberal gets all their news from the same mainstream media sources, since they all use the same buzzwords, like toxic masculinity, white fragility, white privilege, bootlicker, etc. They pretend that they're intellectuals who have come to their own political conclusions, but is it really a coincidence that their views line up with mainstream media outlets exactly? And they just so happen to use the same new-age terminology?

Or, more likely, they are just succumbing to propaganda. But they'd never admit that.

Nowadays, lots of people use tech on a very cursory level. But there are very few people who are genuinely tech-savvy.

Someone might use Facebook and a phone and a computer, but they don't know about rooting Android, they don't know about malware, don't know about Linux, NoScript, VPNs, CVEs, data structures and algorithms, why it's important to update, alternative ROMS, kali, wireshark, shodan, Tor, RESTful APIs, MEAN stack development, shell scripts, etc etc. But because they are able to press the power button and do simple tasks, they think they're tech-savvy. Never used an IDE in their life. Couldn't write a fizzbuzz if their life depended on it. But they still call themselves nerds and say they're into tech. Why? The other day a guy was complaining about ads on his phone, so I told him to install Firefox and uBlock Origin. He told me he wouldn't do that because he didn't want to install "cleaner apps" on his phone. He thinks Firefox is junkware, comparable to fake antivirus. I was trying to help him with a phone issue he was describing, yet he rejected my proposed solution.

Then you have the people who've done simple shit like assembling a computer. They think putting a graphics card into a PCIe 16x slot is somehow equivalent to having a computer science degree. As if putting standardized components together is the height of tech-savviness. I've also noticed that, among people who do this, when they tell me about it, they talk down to me, because their initial assumption is that nobody else knows how to do this. Why? Dunning-Kruger?

321 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9092 00:55

Then there are the tribalist retards. Some nerds see my MacBook and automatically assume that I don't use anything else. Yeah, go ahead and tell me how you saved so much money building a desktop. Apparently it's impossible for someone to build their own desktop and use a MacBook too! Wow! Congratulations! You know me and my tech usage better than I do! Fucking retards. Oh yeah, and tell me I've never used Windows either, even though I use VMs, Parallels, multi-booting, etc. You, as the "PC Master Race" sperglords, know about Windows more than I do. It's not like I write software for Windows or anything. Nope. Not at all. What's GitHub? I don't know. It's not like I have a lot of open source projects for multiple platforms or anything.

That being said, technology sucks. One of these days, I just want to throw out all of my tech and move to some tiny town in the middle of nowhere and become a farmer or some shit and go to church and have a traditional family. Technology is soulless garbage and programming sucks the life out of me. I hate the kinds of morally-vacuous bugmen who get into tech. I hate gamer types who think games are the only reason to use computers. I hate the security dilettantes who think knowing about cross-site scripting makes them fucking experts on hacking. I hate how smug people get when they learn how to do simple shit. I hate how tech is being used for surveillance and automation to make people's lives worse, with unemployment, the death of privacy, and other bullshit too.

Do you think tech is good? I think it's making society worse in a lot of ways.

You know what's even more annoying? Being one of those people who mostly uses tech on a cursory level to play video games and shit, but also being "the tech guy" in my family that everyone comes to with dumb questions because I know how to snap legos together and installed ubuntu once. People bring me all their stupid devices and expect me to know exactly what it is and how to fix it like I'm a fucking tech-priest or something.

>because they are able to press the power button and do simple tasks, they think they're tech-savvy.

There are people out there who can't even do that. Pushing the power button and reading the text a box on the screen and following the instructions in the text is some kind of fucking ancient voodoo to them and people who are able to do it are sorcerers of utmost power and esteem. Sometimes it's hard to remember that it's not you that's particularly smart, it's just the people around you that are dumb.

324 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9092 01:54

It's not entirely their fault though. College recruiters and whatnot get people into STEM and computer fields by making it sound like you're gonna be the fucking science officer of the USS Enterprise pushing the limits of technology and boldly going where no man has etc etc. What conceal from you is that those jobs do exist, but you're much more likely to end up as an dead-eyed code monkey making fart apps for iOS or snapping legos together for some HVAC company in Shattuck, Oklahoma.

325 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9092 02:02

Also I don't think it's exactly limited to computers. These days, if you know how to change your own oil you're an expert car mechanic. Know how to make a roux and you're a 4 star chef. The days of the renaissance man, the person who has at least a cursory understanding of the way the things around him work, are long over. Now are the days of infantilized bugmen who make a service call to the cable company to have them come out and power cycle their modem.

Whatfs a MacBook, whatfs a pc, the thought of hardware defined systems was archaic in the early 90s how are you people still entrenched in this bullshit. The system exists as a disparate set of interfaces guaranteed to have hardware backing them up somewhere over a good network and thatfs all the system needs to know. Agnostic of hardware and software version minutae and even general OS constraints the 9P passes through all equally regardless of actual hardware location. In the distant past the promises of utility were kept by having locked down systems of stable pieces, the plan9 lets these promises be fulfilled by having the necessities be allowed to be freely and transparently mounted from anywhere in the system even across different architectures and component versions.
Computer is over, the system has begun.

Sure, having an education sounds great and all. I'm glad I went to college. But at the same time, this level of debt is unacceptable. Maybe parents for future generations will only let their kid go to college if they're genuinely talented or studying a major that will definitely lead to a good career, instead of this gender studies/underwater basketweaving nonsense. Not worth the massive debt unless there's a return on investment. For many right now, there is none.

It's definitely a bubble, but it's probably gonna fizzle rather than burst. Student loans are a lot harder to escape than housing loans, so it's not like everybody can just suddenly stop paying them. They just keep paying less and less every year.

>>354
Taxes. The US has cut education funding dramatically since the 2008 recession (<a href="https://www.cbpp.org/research/state-budget-and-tax/a-lost-decade-in-higher-education-funding">Source</a>) and while it's slowly rising, they could definitely do better. The US can't afford to make college completely free like a smaller country such as Germany, but it could definitely do better. Even without raising taxes, the US could simply cut other parts of the budget, such as defense, to pay for education.

Without state funding, the cost of education shifts from taxpayers to students, which just makes the problem worse. Students can't afford to contribute to the economy because they're too busy paying off student loans. Colleges make budget cuts, decreasing the quality of education and producing less students who are good for the economy. The only people who profit from the situation are moneylenders, and even they might take a loss when the bubble fizzles.

That said, the belief that everybody needs a college education is silly to begin with. For many jobs, experience and training in a specific skill-set is much more important. But everybody wants to get a degree, leading to degree inflation: these days a bachelor's degree is practically meaningless unless you went to a big-name school, and even then employers still value actual skill and experience more than the piece of paper.

Speaking of unnecessary education, US medical students typically need to study 8 years vs. 5-6 years in the rest of the world. The extra two years doesn't increase the quality of the doctors, it just increases health care costs because we need to pay doctors more to pay off their massive tuition debts.

So yeah, these problems could be solved by lower enrollment, lower degree requirements for jobs, and higher education spending. But good luck convincing Americans to do either of those.

The problem with most of the threads here (aside from this one) is that they're just lists, not discussions. So many posts, but very little interaction between users.

Ctrl+v, google, youtube, etc. -- these threads have next to zero interaction, it's just a place where people mutually post shit that almost no one replies to or discusses.

And when you actually do reply, people think that's a problem. Then they bring up eternal september for the millionth time, which I doubt most people here were even around for in the first place. Weird board culture. Isn't the point of a text board to talk with other people? A discussion board should have actual discussions, not just lists.

374 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9095 00:20

I've felt that too, the list threads are fine but this is pretty much the only thread that gets any kind of actual interaction and back-and-forth between users. But actually I think the problem is that this thread has become kind of the catchall for anything that isn't listposting and trying to make a discussion thread on this or that topic ends with someone posting 2GET and the thread dying after like 8 posts.

375 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9095 00:22

Then again looking back through the thread list, most threads fall off in activity after maybe 30 posts at most.

Yeah, list or game threads are successful because it's easy to keep them alive. Discussions don't usually last that long.

We could start a [general discussion] thread but it wouldn't be that different than the current thoughts thread, and the arbitrary requirement to talk to other people rather than just posting random shit would probably cause it to die off. I think it's fine the way it is now.

I actually kind of like the list threads because it's like going to an art gallery. You're presented with the art with little-to-no explanation and you just have to judge for yourself what to think of it.

The content seemingly comes from disparate places, but at the same time there's a common thread, and by lurking you were able to understand and read the vibe of the place. You didn't need extra commentary to understand where the poster was coming from. The Eternal September thing is a bit tongue-in-cheek but is still relevant, and it's kind of one of the central themes of the place more than just one of the memes. >"why communism is super cool and DQN is a bunch of problematic racist neckbeards"

I think helping people when they're in need is good and I don't like when people post the n word or other slurs here. What's wrong with that?

>"I live in the ghetto and it sucks and this is somehow the fault of the LIBTARDS"

I do indeed live in an area with high crime, and SJWs are indeed annoying. I am not an SJW. I also like the environment. Someone posted the n word when talking about where I live, and that's not okay.

These things do not contradict each other. If you think they do, it's because you think people's views need to be a.) static and b.) exactly like caricatures of political parties.

Real life views aren't as simple as being 100% stereotypically group A or 100% stereotypically group B. People are also allowed to change their opinions over time. I am neither a republican nor a democrat.

>not every thread has to be about you and your super important opinions

I didn't make the posts about myself. I sometimes make posts about ideology or politics, but that's not about me -- that's about issues. You try to make it about me. I don't.

I am simply responding to posts other people have made, such as your post. Don't derail this thread, focus on me, and then blame me when you're the ones talking about me. I don't come up with a name for myself -- someone else calls me "iOS-chan". I do not post with a name or tripcode, nor am I interested in being known with a name here. I am not making this thread about me. Someone else (or multiple other people) are. That is not my fault. Stop derailing the thread.

Stop posting about me. That's not what this thread is for.

Lastly, you seem to think sarcasm is "schizo" or trolling or something. Sarcasm and satire are perfectly legitimate. If I posted something like "I just LOVE when people make posts like that" I might really mean I don't like it at all. That's not dishonesty, that's just sarcasm. If you can't understand sarcasm or satire, it's not my fault.

412 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9095 22:45

I think you just don't understand that people's views aren't as simple as you want them to be. I'm not schizophrenic lol. And maybe you think I made posts I actually didn't make.

And touching on what I said before: exaggeration, hyperbole, jokes, satire, and sarcasm -- these aren't schizophrenia. People with autism or asperger's syndrome have difficulty understanding them though. So is that why you don't get it?

Imagine getting this mad about quotes, or people having opinions about politics.

This is what happens when you're in the habit of talking in an extremely structured/restrictive way for too long. Can't accept anything different. But it can be good to have an open mind and really listen to different perspectives.

When Galileo was right about the earth revolving around the sun, instead of the other way around (which was accepted as true at the time), he was attacked for thinking differently, even though he was right. People wanted their comforting lies instead of thinking critically to find the truth. Nobody likes their worldview to be challenged.

Nobody ever really even talks about the Eternal September other than when someone refers to mad dates in the future... it's like back in the day when people would start threads on /m/ and say "What's /mu/'s thoughts on _____?" and the regulars would chuckle and say "Why don't you ask them". One of those telltale signs that they stumbled in from the rain.

I only made a post about list threads, then people made it about me. It was a quick way to summarize what happened, using the format that you have a problem with. But you apparently had no problem with the posts leading up to it? And are people just going to ignore the death threats? That's not okay either.

Look at >>372- and the following responses. I didn't make it about me, I was just noticing how weird it is for many threads to have very little interaction. Then posting devolved into personal attacks. But that's not what it was originally about.

Okay then. If you had your way, what would /dqn/ consist of? List threads of Wikipedia articles of people whose names sound like funny words? People posting old aa art or anime stuff? That's it? You really want it to be so restrictive that people can't post about anything else? How come? Or do you think posts like >>438 are better? Yikes.

>>436
I never mentioned any of those things. Additionally, topics such as deep ecology are not even American. Deep ecology, especially Linkola-based ideology, is Finnish. Do you think Finland is in America?

I am not talking about Trump or Hillary. I am talking about Linkola. I suppose Ted is American. But it has less to do with American fad politics and more to do with general dislike of modernity, which is not an inherently American phenomenon. I do occasionally express dislike for US-specific things, but not the "pee-pee sex tapes" or "literally hitler" things you mentioned.

Why do you think it's wrong to be conscious of current political issues? Should we all just resort to escapism and not work on anything? It seems like a lot of people here like escapism, such as anime or games. But what does that accomplish? When there are problems in the world, ignoring them won't fix anything.

It's like you think pointing out banal, obvious things makes you some kind of visionary and then start acting like a college freshman who came back to his hometown for the summer and had to spend the entire time telling everyone why everything they're doing is bad and wrong. I'd also like to point out that people can indeed not practice what they preach. For example, I drink, but I think alcohol is bad. That doesn't mean someone is a troll, or that they're schizophrenic, it just means they're not perfect.

So when people claim that posts are "disjointed" or whatever, sometimes people are conflicted or unsure of things, or sometimes they change their mind, or yes, sometimes people are indeed hypocritical. We're only human.

I post on anonymous boards about these things because discussing politics with friends, family, or coworkers can be stressful, especially when they're diametrically opposed to your views. Posting politics on social media, like Twitter, is an easy way to have a bad time, with trolling, doxxing, harassment, people trying to get you fired, etc.

/pol/ is too /pol/ for me. Tumblr is too tumblry. Reddit censors people and it has that shitty "I fucking love science XD" attitude. Twitter has the "twitter do ya thing!" brigading/mob mentality problem. Instagram is just about pretending your life is cooler than it really is. Facebook is garbage. None of those places are suitable for serious discussions about ideology or political views.

Sometimes you just want to discuss issues, but there isn't necessarily a perfect place to do so. So you settle with some not-really-great place to post.

This is far from the only place I post online. But it's the only place I talk about these kinds of issues.

Identity is complicated. You have different titles. A single person can be a man, a son, a father, a husband, an employee, a coworker, an event organizer, a friend, a patient, a customer, an acquaintance, a car in traffic, and a stranger. It depends on how you know that person. To different people, that same person seems like a completely different person, because of their roles. They do not conduct themselves the same in every relationship. Social media is similar. Not all discussions or posts are suitable for all platforms. But sometimes, there isn't a great place for certain things. A lot of social media structures lead to pigeonholing, and there isn't always a right answer of where to put something.

>>447 Man, that's time I won't get back, what did any of that have to do with the post you're replying to? Why is this you only place you talk about these kinds of things, surely the least relevant place for it out of all the places you post online?

450 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9096 00:49

>>444 I actually considered making a thread like "outline your political views ITT" but decided against it, figuring it would get too heated. I guess I can just do it here. Plus, I think our perspectives are more similar than you might think.

Note, all copulaic(x is/are y) statements to follow should be read as if they started with "In my opinion,...", I just can't be assed writing it every time.

Anyway, in my teens, I would have at points variously called myself a Communist, or a Trotskyist, or a Fascist, partially out of a teenage desire to be edgy but also because of, at least I thought so at the time, an attraction to ideologies with a strong, centralized authority. However I realized later on that it wasn't the strong authority I was attracted to but rather the revolutionary utopianism of those ideologies, all of which seek to deconstruct the modern capitalist system and build something new and better(from the perspective of the ideology itself) in its place. I've since become disillusioned with all of them after realizing that they still have the fundamental problem of quashing people into cogs in a vast machine of state. I do still find that revolutionary utopianism attractive, though.

Nowadays, I refuse to call myself an anything-ist. Isms mean being fettered by ideological purity and being forced to approach every problem not from the perspective of "what is the best thing to do here" but rather "what would a perfect *ist do here"?

Fundamentally, I believe people ought to be free to do what they like without interference from the government, as long as it doesn't harm others (this would extend to causing indirect harm, such as littering or polluting). Economic growth ought to be secondary to the health and wellbeing not just of citizens but of the environment. If we take it as axiomatic that the primary concerns of the state are the security, health, and overall wellbeing of its citizens, then education and healthcare ought to be subsidized. Since citizens already contribute part of their income to pay for their collective security(ie, they fund the military with their taxes), I don't think funding the other two as well is that big of a stretch. Fully funding them 100% for whoever wants them might not be feasible in as big a country as America but you lot could probably still afford to partially subsidize them as well.

Building on the collective security aspect, I disagree with the statement that "violence is never the answer", but it should be a last resort. Both states and individuals should have the right to defend themselves from aggressors.

There probably are fundamental biological differences between the races and genders, but rather than trying to erase racism and sexism by pretending there aren't, we should embrace them as part of the diversity of the human species.

I do sympathize with migrants and refugees seeking to build a better life in another place, however most people advocating the hardest for open borders and unlimited immigration quotas are capitalist elites seeking to poison the well of public discourse by presenting it as an issue of race to disguise the fact that they're making huge profits off those people. The ones that do work drive down the cost of labor and reduce wages across the board, the ones that don't work and instead receive welfare or something still necessarily use that welfare money to purchase goods and services, which basically turns the welfare which was made with good intentions to keep people from starving and dying in the street like they used to, into an indirect subsidy of their businesses and enterprises.

Sexuality is a spook, and at its core is just another ism that leads to tribalistic thinking. Just fuck who you want to fuck and leave each other alone about it. It's not super important.

Religion is a spook, and mostly a tool for enforcing social cohesion via shame and encouraging ingroup-outgroup thinking. However people should be free to believe what they want, as long as they don't use it as an excuse to harm others.

Discussion and debate, especially of politics, should occur with the goal of discovering the fundamental truth or best course of action of a particular matter, not simply proving yourself right and your "opponent" wrong. Sometimes you may truly be objectively right and your "opponent" objectively wrong, but using that as a foil to develop your own viewpoint and reach a mutual understanding is also part of the course of a proper debate.

452 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9096 01:04

>>451
I might address more of your points later, but for now, on the topic of sexuality: I think people spend too much time talking about sexuality and LGBT stuff, to the point of it being a "distraction" issue (though that might seem paranoid), and not enough time discussing other issues. It's like, democrats and republicans will debate whether they support gay marriage, but they won't talk about the pitfalls of capitalism, consumerism, how to fix poverty or climate change, etc. So it's a safe issue to bring up, regardless of their stance on it. That being said, I'm against degeneracy in a lot of ways, since I'm pro-family values and all that.

But I also feel like it's a case of a prisoner decorating their cell walls. By that, I mean people who are powerless to change or discuss other meaningful aspects of their lives fixate on things that they can change/do: pronouns, sexuality/gender identity, etc. People who are powerless, unhappy, etc. cling to the few things they feel like they have control over, and then they obsess over them, rather than working towards other things that might seem insurmountable. Sexuality is not the biggest problem in life right now, but many shift goalposts and talk about it like it's the only thing in life because they feel like they can't do anything else.

I also feel like some people only claim to be LGBT for attention, since social media makes people think that you're better if you have more friends, likes, comments, etc.

It's also used as a political weapon now too, like "this guy said 'faggot' once 10 years ago, let's get him fired" but the ulterior motive is that the person actually supports a political party they dislike, and the "homophobic" thing is just a farce.

But it also seems like an agenda is being pushed, since there is a lot of anti-white/anti-traditional rhetoric in the mainstream media now, and people are encouraging abortions, not having kids, being gay, etc. But meanwhile, the same media outlets are pushing for mass immigration. I'm not a neocon or a republican, since they're anti-environment and pro-capitalism and shit, but at the same time, I can't help but feel like there's an concerted effort to push for mass immigration. It's not about diversity, it's about capitalism. Need more people from other countries to increase sales to make fatcat shareholders happy. But it also feels like population replacement. I don't like that.

453 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9096 01:20

>>452 Yeah, that's what I was getting at. I don't have a problem with LGBT people per se(I'm not exactly straight as an arrow myself), but I feel like LGBT issues get disproportionate coverage in the media and public discourse.

I really like your second paragraph, and the statement that no matter what one's actual stance is, LGBT issues are a "safe" issue to bring up because getting people riled up about other people's genitals and their choice of who to rub those genitals on keeps them from getting riled up about how their suffering is being exploited by the capitalist elites to make massive, unthinkable profits that they'll never see even a fraction of a cent of because it's sitting in a bank account in the Cayman Islands or something.

Put it another way: I'm a male, my preferred sexual partner is other males. I won't try to hide that, but neither is it the ALL ENCOMPASSING CORE of my personality and worldview. It's just one of many things that make me "me", but for some people it feels like that's all there is to them. It feels like that for a lot of straight people too, we just don't think of it in those terms. Being overly obsessed with sex in general, where to have it, who to have it with, etc etc is just another symptom of the poison of modernity.

I've only had sex with girls before, but I sometimes have gay thoughts, even though I've never been with a guy. I might consider getting with a guy at some point, or maybe not, but at the end of the day, I still want to eventually have a wife and kids, not a husband or boyfriend. But I'd say that having gay thoughts doesn't mean your identity is being gay. I think we are all hardwired for heterosexuality.

I still see my occasional gay thoughts as a problem, not something to accept. Some people have anxiety, some people have down syndrome, some people have gay thoughts. I think it's a mental illness and it shouldn't be normalized.

The most fundamental purpose of our lives is to reproduce. It's in our DNA. Besides, then you can continue your genes and raise people who will have your views and whatnot. Teach them to care about what you care about. Teach them your trade early in life so they'll be even better at it than you are when they're your age. If you're a programmer, teach them programming early. If you're a welder, teach them welding early. Teach them your political views too. Teach them your religion. Contribute good people to the world instead of letting it decay even further. The world needs more good people. Keep your legacy going. That's really important, don't you think? But you can't do that if you're gay.

I still feel no association to the LGBT community, because it's largely anti-religion, pro-immigration, and basically pro-flavor-of-the-month leftist issues. Democrats seem to think they own the votes of minorities and gays. Not mine though.

And shit like pride parades are degenerate as hell.
"Hey, how can we convince people that gays are just normal people too?"
"Let's have huge floats with rainbows and dicks and borderline nudity and weird-ass costumes!"
Yeah, that'll show 'em.

Also, cutting your dick off and taking hormone pills doesn't magically turn a guy into a girl.

and I don't watch much TV or any of that stuff, but I agree with the perspective that LGBT acceptance "movements" are easily co-opted by liberals who are obviously invested into not shedding a single penny for anyone in need. Wow, people did something in the past! That means my views are invalid now. Better give up caring about immigration because you said it's on Wikipedia! I can't have opinions and values when something on Wikipedia says otherwise.

Besides, how come liberals are only anti-Christianity? You bend over backwards for other religions.

>LARPing as a gay/bi guy in denial

Nope. Consider this: I can smoke a cigarette without being a smoker. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. I drink beer even though I think alcohol is bad. A cancer patient has cancer, but that doesn't mean they ENJOY having cancer. It's just something they have. They did not choose to have it, but that doesn't mean they should want to have it.

Not every person who plays games calls themselves a gamer. Not everyone who goes to the gym calls themselves a weight lifter or bodybuilder. I've had gay thoughts before, and I've looked at gay porn. But I've had a wide range of negative thoughts. I've had suicidal thoughts in the past, but should people tell me that my identity is being a suicidal person, based on fleeting thoughts that are no longer relevant? Should my identity revolve around bad thoughts I've had occasionally, or should I just acknowledge that it's a flaw and move on?

>you dismiss as the devil making you horny for men

Not what I wrote. You're trying to say I said something I didn't.

>try using degenerate less, retard

>if i wanted to argue with spooked simpletons, i'd go to reddit.

lmao

>I don't watch much TV or any of that stuff

Neither do I. Do you really think you're so special and different?

>this "family values" garbage

Oof. Did you grow up with a mom and dad? Did they function well? I grew up in a broken home to degenerate atheist liberals who had all sorts of problems, in an extremely liberal area, possibly the most ultra-leftist areas in the country, and that has pushed me to realize that the nuclear family, religion, and conservatism (but not in a neocon sense) is important for society, for a number of reasons. Having a good upbringing during your formative years really shapes who you are, and that's why family values are important.

>fucking neonazi

White people who don't have themselves are nazis, apparently. Okay, buddy. I'm also mixed race. I think I've mentioned that before. But the fact of the matter is that there is a ton of hatred towards white people these days. That's not okay. If you don't think it's okay to hate black people, then how come you think it's okay to hate white people? What's with the double standard?

>burn in the dumpster fire of ideology where it belongs.

You're wishing death on people who disagree with you but apparently I'm the neo-nazi. Got it. No self-awareness at all.

479 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9096 20:21

>>478
Maybe asceticism isn't the right word, but just general anti-hedonism. Too many people these days just live for pleasure. There's more to life than bread and circus.

I don't like the following things:
•People who don't go to the gym -- you don't have to be in perfect shape, but you have to at least try to improve yourself
•People who don't read books, or only read shitty books, like scifi, fantasy, romance, etc. rather than books about ideology, history, religion, or other important issues. There is a big difference between someone who reads Chomsky/Nietzsche/Linkola/etc and someone who reads Harry Potter or Ready Player One. Some books make you think, others are just useless ways to pass the time.
•People who enjoy TV, movies, video games, etc.
•People who constantly talk about how "bored" they are, and think being entertained is the only important thing in life
•People who don't do anything productive in their time off work/school
•Extreme wealth is corrupting, because then it changes how you live your life. You can have a mansion, sports car, golden chandeliers, fancy silverware, etc. None of that shit really matters. It's just materialistic garbage. Materialism and excess wealth are bad.
•Not having a sense of purpose in life and just floating around doing nothing in particular
•Hyper-sexuality, fueled by modern media, Tinder, etc.
•People who consume, but don't create. People who watch movies, eat comfort food, etc. but won't write something, won't program something, won't paint something, won't make things on their own. It's very liberating to make things.

You don't have to be 100% pure with asceticism, but being overly-indulgent is really bad. Modern western culture is extremely indulgent.

Here's an example of someone I know in real life: he's my age and he calls himself a gamer and a stoner. He plays games because it's fun and entertaining to him. He smokes weed to feel good. He defines his entire identity around self-absorbed pleasure-seeking. What a useless existence.

I'm somewhat hypocritical in the sense that I drink. I think alcohol is indulgent/hedonistic, so it's something I need to be aware of. But that doesn't change the way I feel about it. It doesn't make what I say invalid. You can be aware of a problem instead of pretending that everything you do is perfect. I feel like liberals nowadays are too keen on trying to accept all of their problems instead of working on them. Like fat acceptance, LGBT acceptance, etc -- why not try to work on your problems instead of giving up and forcing everyone to tolerate them?

So do I. The place with a deal on toaster ovens was 20 miles in the opposite direction, though, and for most of the highway I didn't get out of second gear. I was slightly smarter with my road choice on the way back, but by then it was rush hour.

>>482
It's just okay. I got to the grocery store so late that all the newly baked bread was gone, so this loaf is a bit stale. Maybe I should moisten it a little.

On the plus side, I am now the proud owner of a semi-industrial toaster oven that uses so much wattage that it probably violates my lease every time I turn it on.

Right wing? Yeah, sure. I guess. But not a typical neocon who only cares about tax rates and pretending that climate change is a myth. Those kinds of "right wing" politicians are useless and nothing like my views. SJW? Hell no. Maybe by SJW, you simply mean someone with strong convictions. Then sure, I guess by that definition, I am. But if you mean in terms of actual social justice and gender stuff, no way. I am diametrically opposed to that kind of ideology.

To call me a right-wing SJW really demonstrates your inability to understand what I'm saying. It's an easy way for you to be dismissive without having to think very hard about it.

>legislate morality

Legalizing and normalizing degeneracy is not "legislating morality." You're so far down the leftist rabbit hole that you don't even see how immoral your values are.

Despite being raised by and around degenerates, I've come to accept that traditional Christian values are great. with a couple twists, of course. And not that soft beta Christian "we accept everybody" brand of garbage either.

>use it as a means to control and pacify people

I'll never understand the "pacify people" argument. Are you saying people are so unstable that they need legal weed to stop themselves from doing bad? If people have lives full of meaning, they won't need pacifism. They will have purpose. A lot of the hedonistic things people do nowadays is sort of like a negative coping mechanism for dealing with how awful modern life is. How about we try and correct that and make life worth living instead of having to use a band-aid feel-good thing on top of a flawed society?

>you disagree with their specific morality

Moral relativism is a load of shit. Things are either moral or immoral. Moral absolutism. None of this humanist, secular, appeal-to-moderation, "everyone is right in their own way despite contradicting each other" logical fallacy. If I say 2+2=4 and someone else says 2+2=6, then fence-sitters would claim it's in between, so surely it must be 2+2=5. Or some people, who are afraid to take a stance, would say it's both 2+2=4 AND 2+2=6 simultaneously, because they're afraid to offend people. In reality, some people are objectively right, and some people are objectively wrong. Modern liberalism is immoral, plain and simple.

Just because something is normalized does not mean it's right. I could bring up the Galileo example again, or plenty of other things too. Even capitalism, pollution, consumerism, materialism, and mass media are normalized despite being terrible. Liberals think liberalism must be right because it's popular. Lots of popular things are awful.

People are rioting. People are extremely angry on social media. Drug usage and suicide rates are pretty high. You want to tell me that liberal America is just fine the way it is? Maybe you're from a different country, I don't know. But no matter where you are, I'm sure even you are able to see some of the problems with modern living.

>good faith engagement

Insulting me, ignoring my points (because I guess you don't have a comeback?), calling me a troll, etc. is not a "good faith engagement" by any stretch of the imagination.

>>487
You should still post your comments anyway, instead of writing and then deleting/not posting them.

You say you're a "normal, boring individual" but it's interesting to hear what you have to say. What's normal to you isn't normal to someone else. To you, it's routine. To someone else, it's different and interesting. Don't preemptively put yourself down. That's no good.

Why do people always think hackers are eastern european or Russian? Remember that US government organization called the NSA? Hello!

But even then, a lot of the real issue with security and privacy is the companies themselves, where, in one sentence in a 10,000 word EULA, they grant themselves the legal ability to spy on you and sell your personal data to advertisers using your IoT toilet.

I'm really less worried about muh Russian hackers, and more concerned about Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, etc. They have more power than most governments now.

There was a girl in my friend group in high school. It became clear at a certain point that she had developed a crush on me. Not realizing its magnitude, and also not desirous of a romantic relationship with her, I feigned ignorance. I feigned ignorance much longer than I should have, until a mutual friend called me out publicly for "being mean to her". As if the blame for the subject never explicitly coming up in conversation lay solely at my feet. Okay, whatever.

Honestly, she was a pretty cool person aside from that tension. But it never would have worked out between us. I like to think that healthy human beings are just naturally beautiful, or close enough to get the job done. And most of them are.

But not her.

It has been several years since we graduated and went our separate ways. According to Facebook, she is now happily married and raising a bright, energetic child. And she has somehow become even uglier than she used to be.

>>479 Hmmm, sort of interesting, though I'm a bit disappointed that asceticism isn't what you actually meant. I'm on board with some of your points, to some extent, but what I see as the main flaw there is how many of the things you don't like are things "other people" do. Everyone is thrust into this world by chance and are given a finite amount of time on it, and everyone is stumbling around looking for their place and their purpose. I agree that it's a shame how some people choose to spend their precious time, but that includes other people who spend their time casting aspersions on the lifestyle choices of others instead of worrying about themselves. You might put your faith your own standards of morality and decent living, but no one human can set the bar for everyone/anyone else. It might seem like a good idea living to Christian values, but how much of those values come down to sour grapes? You mention Nietzsche, maybe you've read his Genealogy Of Morals - how often are the people who vilify extreme wealth and hyper-sexuality the same people who would love more money to buy nice things, who no one wants to sleep with?

506 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9097 09:55

I'm reminded of a Russel Brand quote, distasteful as I find the guy. Something about "when I was poor and wanted to talk about worker's lib, they said I was just a sour cunt; now that I'm rich and want to talk about worker's lib they call me a champagne socialist. I'm beginning to think they just don't want me to talk about worker's lib".

>how often are the people who vilify extreme wealth and hyper-sexuality the same people who would love more money to buy nice things, who no one wants to sleep with?

If I had more money, I'd put it towards useful things, not useless luxury things. Pay off college debt, get car repairs, etc. But there's a difference between having enough money for yourself and being corrupt by insane wealth, like being a billionaire. There are different effects at different scales of wealth.

I might be getting a more high-paying job soon, but even then, that's still not the same level of wealth I'm talking about here. And it still doesn't make me okay with capitalism.

And are you implying I'm a virgin or something? I've had girlfriends before. Even had a couple casual hookups. But I'm just so put off knowing that so many women my age have had a million dicks inside them.

One of my exes, a single mom now, named her kid (who she had with some other guy) after me. This is some sort of weird cuck shit and I don't like it one bit. But now she's talking about marriage and she wants some sucker to pay for her life, even after she became a single mom after sleeping with too many dudes.

I've been cheated on before too. We broke up after that. Modern relationships are fucked up.

One of my old friends, a super fat ugly feminist, date raped me when I went to hang out with her one time many years ago. I went to her place, we were just hanging out as friends, she brought us drinks, said something about if it was okay if she violated me, and then I blacked out -- after a single beer (she must have put something in it) -- and then, next thing I know, she was driving me back to my apartment and then tucked me into bed. But this bitch still complains about SJW garbage on social media. Oh yeah, and I came across her Tumblr once, and in the time span that I had one relationship with someone, she was with like half a dozen people (some men, some women). That ain't right.

I just want to have something that is seemingly unattainable -- a wife who is monogamous, loyal, wants to have kids, is Christian, right-wing, stable, isn't grotesquely fat, doesn't already have kids from some other guy, and hasn't slept with a million guys. I'm not expecting someone to be a virgin, but a lot of people fuck way too many people. My best bet would be to move to the countryside, but unfortunately cities tend to have way more tech jobs, so that's why I am where I am. Around here, shit like LGBT, open relationships, cheating, stepdads, etc is common. Completely dysfunctional.

Or maybe you could just stop derailing the thread and then things will go back to normal. If you don't want people to post about something, stop posting about it. Don't keep on bringing something up and then complain that other people continue to bring it up too.

Think of it like this. Imagine if someone made a comment about tomatoes, and then you said you don't want to talk about tomatoes. Over time, people eventually stop talking about it, or at least don't bring it up very much. Then other people start talking about how they hate tomatoes, and then the pro-tomato guy starts talking about them again (in response to the anti-tomato posts). Then you say "WHY ARE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT TOMATOES? OH MY GOD STOP ALREADY" and then continue to bash tomatoes, generating more discussion about them in the process, and for some reason you think that will somehow quell the tomato talk. However, it only gets people to continue talking about it, because the pro-tomato person wants to clear up any negative comments about tomatoes. But if other people didn't keep on bringing up their hatred for tomatoes, there wouldn't really be any discussion about it at all, and isn't that what they wanted?

Do you understand what I'm saying, or do I have to phrase it in yet another post? I have gone over this idea many times already, but nobody listens.

536 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9098 19:47

I specifically didn't go to Ikea today, but still got caught up in half an hour of Ikea-bound traffic thanks to it being the first rainy weekend in what must have seemed like several lifetimes to the hordes of people desperate to browse self-assembly furniture now that they couldn't see the sun again.

I was born an insufferable hipster. In elementary school I never understood why other children liked boring mainstream shit like batman, power rangers, teenage mutant ninja turtles, and dinosaurs. In middle school I didn't understand the appeal of boy bands, skateboards, Star Wars, and Britney Spears. By high school I'd learned to just block out pop culture completely.

I eventually learned to hide my distaste for mainstream pop culture in order to make friends, but it still slips out sometimes. The other night my friends mentioned Seinfeld and I accidentally blurted out "man, I hate Seinfeld" because man, I really do hate Seinfeld. It's so fucking bland. They just stared at me in disbelief and tried unsuccessfully to convince me that Seinfeld is good. I just nodded and lied "yeah, I probably just need to give it another chance."

Even after years of trying to force myself to enjoy the mainstream in order to fit in, I've completely failed. If anything, I've grown even more judgmental. For example, my sister-in-law has a tattoo of Hello Kitty holding an AK-47. When I was younger I might have found it amusing, because at least it's trying to subvert the mainstream. But now it just seems so cringe-worthy to me. By trying to be edgy and funny, it achieves the exact opposite. It's just lazy, crass, and uncreative.

It seems to me that Sturgeon's Law really is true. But the question is, how can so many people really enjoy all this shit? I honestly don't understand the appeal. I used to think it was because I was "too smart," but a number of my friends who are smarter than myself still love basic mainstream culture.

So there's obviously a problem with me, not everybody else. Yet given a choice between feeling superior or inferior, it's better for my own self-preservation to choose the former. And so I remain a stuck-up elitist that looks down on everyone but tries to hide it to make friends.

Thought this was kopipe but I googled it and there were no results. So it's original parody then?

If you're serious, I think people just consume pop culture because it's easy. The distribution channels are right there. You don't have to try hard to consume TV, movies, or other widely-distributed stuff. Fewer people put in the effort to look for other things.

I guess it also gives you something to talk about with other people. Water cooler conversations and ice breakers.

I just can't stand people's aversion to anything slightly different from the norm. I can see why would someone like mainstream pop but like, Kate Bush is barely any different why wouldn't you like Kate Bush just listen to her, idiot.

And people consciously seeking stuff they can talk about with other people is giving everyone too much credit. I think everyone has these preconceived notions of what should they listen to and what kind of people listen to this or that genre, and it's hard for everyone to detach these ideas from what they are immediately sensing with their ears and eyes. It sounds sad as fuck, that people condition themselves to like the things they like because they ought to, but I think it's true.

By the way, Kate Bush turns 60 today.

Unfortunately most people will find it rude if you shut them down directly. It's much less abrasive to ask a question which indicates your knowledge of the subject, for example:

"Oh yes, I think I've heard about that. What do you think about X?"
or
"Ah yes, isn't it also true that X?"

Where X is something that indicates deep understanding of the concept.

Of course there are many variations on this, the main point is not to directly shut them down with "I know." If you want to change the topic, make X something only tangentially related. If they don't take the hint after multiple attempts to indicate your knowledge, turn the tables by painstakingly explaining the concept to them. Or you can always just make an excuse to end the conversation.

Let's talk about something else. I just found out that there are some alcoholic drinks that have caffeine in them. This both intrigues and worries me. It could be interesting but I could see it going horribly wrong, as it would mask how drunk you are, or possibly lead to elevated risk of cardiac arrest because of the uppers and downers stressing out your heart. But it could also be fucking awesome.

People who use long and fancy synonyms for simple words often do so solely as an attempt to obfuscate their message and seem smarter than they actually are, but in doing so they are making their message less clear, and that's not an effective form of communication. People who do this think they're the only ones who do this, but I've seen it time and time again from English majors. Awkwardly shoehorning GRE vocab into your writing looks bad and it doesn't fool anyone.

646 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9104 01:32

Some people just love language... you can tell when someone's just learned a new word and want to show off, but I like speaking to people with big vocabularies, especially with broad accents. People maybe often do do it to sound smarter, but sometimes a less common word is more precise, or has nicer connotations, or is just better alliteratively ^___^

You're missing the point. I didn't say vocabulary is bad in general, it's just that some people try to use words they don't really understand, so it seems awkward and forced, and you can tell that they're doing it to sound smarter than they really are. If you actually know a word, then by all means use it.

You can tell when someone is using a word they don't really understand though.

Complicated language is often about the writer. It's self-centered. YOU want people to know that YOU are smart. YOU want to express yourself in a way that makes the most sense to YOU, even if it makes less sense to your audience. YOU want to show off what you learned over the years, even if no one else cares.

Simple language is about prioritizing the listener over the speaker. Try to make the message as easy for them as possible. The point of communication should be ensuring that the audience understands.

It's not condescending, it's about efficiency. People might be able to understand a 5,000 word essay from a very articulate person who likes to show off their personal lexicon, but a 500 word essay with easier-to-digest words is preferable because you get the same message across with less time and effort for the reader.

But you can condense that same info into fewer words. Most of the time, anyway. Old school media like TV and books used to try and make things as long as possible, because they didn't have much content, and wanted to drag it out as they could in order to meet some minimum page or time length, such as 300 pages, or 30 minutes for an episode.

Now? Things are different. There's so much media that nobody has time for that shit. Too many posts on social media timelines to read everything. Instead of having a small amount of content and trying to make it as long as possible, you have a lot of content and need to try and make it as brief as possible.

they have enough views to make money from youtube, and they also have an amazon affiliate thing and an etsy store and an ebook and a pinterest page

There's no irony. All those things you mention are superficially modern. Etsy us just another face of the idea of a marketplace which has been around for millenia. They're (I'm assuming) using their time and effort to produce crafts and artisanal goods. The only thing is the marketplace they sell it at isn't a physical one. This is partially out of necessity and partially out of convenience. All of the things you listed that are supposed to run counter to living a "traditional life" are updated formats of preexisting things. Saying "they use the internet so that invalidates the fact that they are living traditional lives" while they are in effect artisans living off their product and physical work is absurd. More importantly how is their family structure? What is their outlook on life? What values do they put emphasis on? These are much more important things to look at than when evaluating them than "well they have a Pinterest account" and other things that are essentially modern wallpaper on age old concepts.

I keep going to look up some english set phrase in japanese and finding out that there's no concise translation or similar-meaning idiom(but there often is one in chinese, weirdly enough) and the best way to describe that thing is by just literally describing it

examples I've had recently:
"benefit of the doubt" - best translation is basically the definition = (Ψ‹’‚Θ‚’‚©‚η)—L—˜‚Ι‰πŽί = judge(someone) favorably (because there is no evidence)
"middle of nowhere" - best translation = l—’—£‚κ‚½ which also just means "far away from human habitation"

I suppose a lot of times that is more like trying to translate cliche for cliche than really getting at the thought behind what was said. The entire thing can become contentious to say the least.

For instance, "middle of nowhere" can be meant with contempt for rural areas and this might be better expressed as ‚Η“cŽΙ despite referring to actual habitation.

I've always been amused and slightly annoyed at the ubiquity of the 'cup of coffee' analogy. I don't drink coffee either, and even if I did I wouldn't spend $3 on it every day, I would make it myself.

You see "buy me a coffee" buttons all over the place, like https://www.buymeacoffee.com/ or https://ko-fi.com/ which claims: "The 'coffee' metaphor is a more human way to receive support." But why?

In real life, when a friend does you a favor, it's taboo to compensate them with money. People say, "don't worry about paying me back, just buy me a drink sometime." The problem seems to be that as soon as money changes hands, it complicates your relationship by mixing the worlds of friendship and business.

This is fine for small favors, but western society takes the concept that cash is crass to the point of absurdity. Friends refuse cash compensation even for huge favors that cost them money. People give each other gift cards, even though cash is so much more practical. At weddings, cash gifts are frowned upon, whereas in Asian countries they are expected to help pay for the expensive ceremony, which is much more practical. It's considered rude to even talk about money, even though doing so could actually be quite beneficial.

It's especially absurd to carry over this concept that cash is crass when begging strangers for money on the internet. "Buy me a coffee", "buy me a beer"...no matter how you phrase it, you're fundamentally still just begging for money. It just strikes me as a sad attempt to pretend that you're everybody's friend.

It must work though, because everybody's doing it.

if you ask for $10, fewer people will give
if you ask for $3, people will be more likely to donate
more people at $3 = more money overall even though it's less money per person

Afterwards, I felt bad about being rough and apologized, but she breathed in an extremely horny voice, "no... that was... extremely hot." Hearing that was one of the best moments of my life. There's something incredibly validating about a girl enjoying when you cum in her mouth and telling you so.

I've noticed this too. At first the girl is extremely emotional and heartbroken, and feels like her world is ending. But a few weeks later, she'll have recovered and the guy still can't get over her, sometimes for years to come.

Of course this is just based on anecdotal evidence, and as with all generalizations there are plenty of counter-examples.

Theoretically the best way to get out of the rut is to dedicate yourself to self-improvement, such as exercise and pursuit of hobbies. This has the added benefit of making yourself more attractive, too. Unfortunately that's much easier said than done.

But then again, you don't want to be content with a bad life. Some people are. If shit's bad, by all means feel bad. But use those negative feelings towards improving your situation so that you can be genuinely content, instead of just resorting to mental gymnastics.

Here's an example of what I mean:
Let's say someone is upset because they're too skinny or fat.
The real solution is to go to the gym and eat better.
The bullshit solution is to post about fat acceptance/fat shaming on social media (which many people do).

Another example:
You're depressed because your life sucks.
The real solution is self-improvement, like learning a trade skill, attempting to get a better job, and things like that.
The bullshit solution is to take antidepressants that don't change your situation at all, but instead just change how your brain makes you feel about it.

You can implement lexical scope in a dynamically-scoped language, but not the other way around.
Thus, much like the relationship between static and dynamic typing, one is undeniably technically superior.
But what languages are statically typed and dynamically scoped?

You can emulate dynamic scope using controlled-access global variables in a lexically-scoped language.
Besides, that argument is just silly: you can't straightforwardly implement COMEFROM statements in most high-level languages, but that obviously does not mean a language with COMEFROM is automatically superior. (Note however that I am not an opponent to dynamic scope.)
why did I fall for this

> But what languages are statically typed and dynamically scoped?

You can use type declarations/annotations everywhere in Common Lisp to pretend it's statically-typed and it has so-called special variables which are dynamically-scoped.

obsessed with syntax and language design to the point of not being able to move on and solve higher-level issues, which is the whole point of programming

Keyword is "emulate", there.
And I didn't mean just extra features, I mean something more all-encompassing: static typing is a strict superset of dynamic typing; dynamic scope is a strict superset of lexical scope.

And yeah, CL gets a special shout-out, as always.

I come from a different world of software. Web developers, apps, and other more modern stuff. These kinds of developers often aren't familiar with concepts like pointers or other lower-level things. Usually just use interpreted languages, with a couple exceptions. Lots of JS and lots of reliance of built-ins, libraries, and frameworks, instead of doing lots of things from scratch.

The people in my software development circles are often self-taught and only know higher-level languages. They might not know how to manually implement sorting algorithms, which is the kind of thing you might learn in computer science academia, but they know the idea of sorting and can just use a .sort() method. They might have never installed Linux, but their AWS instances run Linux. They don't know how to set up iptables, but they do understand the importance of firewalls and security, even if they don't know the specifics. Rather than being puritanical about language and design (and old school CS stuff in general), they just follow modern trends and make presentable products, perhaps without really having a great understanding of everything. Even so, these are the kinds of people who make the apps and websites you use every single day.

People having different backgrounds doesn't make someone a troll or an agitator, it just means they don't share your exact life experiences.

Sure, there are plenty of jobs where software engineering skills, business sense, UX etc. matter more than CS knowledge. CS courses should probably teach these skills more often. However, there's still plenty of problems out there that need CS to solve them. Plenty of innovation is still being done by the people writing CS papers.

It's not like the two worlds are mutually exclusive, either. Plenty of computer scientists write papers and also make practical implementations. It's never a bad thing to learn more. Why can't we all just get along and share knowledge?

>>865 The art of sound design and foley is fascinating! Sometimes you use creative sound synthesis using programming and software, sometimes you use your imagination to record real objects. The trick is to think outside the box to make sounds more impactful or satisfying or gruesome for the effect you're trying to achieve. For example, snapping bundles of celery or slapping steaks together or bags of walnuts for bone-crunching combat sounds, or pouring bowls of soggy cornflakes for vomit sounds. The raptors in Jurassic Park used geese sounds. You can play with the pitch and tempo and various effects to create otherworldly yet organic sounds.

In your video, you could maybe make those mech sounds with like power drills, or balloon whippets for the hydraulic sounds.

You might think I'm making up the part about being a former liberal, but in high school I was forced to be a part of an anti-gun petition thing and I had to write about gay rights and stuff too. I also used to call myself a feminist, which was a cringe-worthy phase in my life. But that was all due to indoctrination, back when I didn't think for myself. Now, I've been pushed too far by other liberals to the point that I want nothing to do with liberalism anymore and I'm voting for Trump in 2020.

Get rid of the edgy profile pic and banner. People who think your tweets are clever will still be hesitant to follow you because of the offensive shit.

Make sure your profile pic doesn't get cut off due to the border-radius thing Twitter does now. Your pic currently has text that is cut off.

Your banner is too busy. Needs less stuff. And some of the images have poor scaling and incorrect aspect ratios. Use something like GIMP to resize with a constraint aspect ratio and use cubic interpolation.

You post too many images with no text at all. Twitter isn't Instagram, you need more text. You retweet lots of unrelated things. You should add captions to things you upload, and you should consider possibly quote tweeting things sometimes. You also have a bad ratio of retweets to content from yourself. Your timeline is mostly just a bunch of retweets from other people, and images with no text or context. That comes off as silent. You need to have more of a voice. That's what Twitter is for.

You need to have a more descriptive bio. Include titles and maybe a one-liner joke.

Your account needs a narrower focus overall. It seems like you're going for edgy humor, but then you retweet random unrelated stuff. People want to be able to pigeonhole an account as being for a specific thing, not just all over the place. If you want to be the edgy guy, be the edgy guy. If not, don't.

You posted a selfie... on an edgy account. Either go PC or full anon. Don't upload personal stuff like selfies on an account where you're making 9/11 and race jokes. Also, your selfie was bad. It was from an unflattering angle, in poor lighting, and you need a haircut and a shave. Fix those things and it will look so much better. Take pictures from above and away, with good lighting, not below and up close and dark. A good backdrop also helps.

Your ratio of following to followers is really bad. Also, be sure to follow people who follow you. And engage with your mutuals.

Consider making a CuriousCat account and linking to that in your Twitter profile. It can increase follower engagement.

Tweet with more regularity if you want people to follow you.

Your pinned tweet has no numbers. I looked through your other tweets, and you have two funny tweets that have a lot of likes and retweets. One of those should be your pinned tweet.

About your handle: it's called DM on Twitter... not PM. Maybe change it to SendEyeBags, since punctuation is bad.

Unfollow people who don't follow you. When you are following hundreds of people and only have a couple dozen followers, it looks bad. Of course, if you ever get successful enough at twitter that you have thousands and thousands of followers, then it becomes impossible to follow everybody back and then engage with each and every one of your mutuals.

Lastly, there are a couple effective (but shitty) way to increase the number of followers: be kind of a leech and respond to tweets by very popular accounts. You're essentially piggybacking off their fame. It's effective, but don't overdo it. There are some Twitter accounts with tens of thousands of followers simply because all they do is reply to Trump's tweets. It's a shitty form of self-promotion. I'm not saying you should tweet at Trump, I'm just saying you could get more followers by finding accounts relevant to your interests and then engaging with them. Then, the people who like those accounts will like you, since you are related to the stuff they already know they like. Example: if you're into sports, respond to tweets about sports from accounts with 100k+ followers. If you're into video games, respond to tweets about video games from accounts with 100k+ followers.

A second way to get more followers is to simply follow people who are similar to you. Search profiles for hashtags, words, etc. that are related to you and your personality and posts. Who are you? What are you interested in? Figure that out and search Twitter. A lot of people do follow4follow, as shitty as it might be. But it really does work. Just don't overdo it!

929 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9115 00:13

Elaborating on what I said about following people in hopes of them following you back: look at their ratio of following to followers. If they're more or less 1:1, then do it. But if they have 10k followers and are only following 200 people, don't bother. They are not likely to follow back at that point.

In general twitter is, imo, probably the least-shitty social media network(no real name policy, lax policy on r18 content, useable without enabling javascript, etc) but the obsession with follower counts is the biggest demerit against it. just be interesting and post interesting things and followers will come organically.

really the key takeaway is: the best bet for most people is to create content that adds value to the people you wanna be online friends with (fans or other creators). you are best off filling a niche of some sort to have a chance of being popular, but it is not worth being popular unless it's a niche you love. if it is something where you are truly good at the content, you will expand your niche to its maximum possible reach when your best posts leak out.

also only post things that you are okay with literally everyone on planet earth remembering you posted it and responding to you. chances are they won't, but they might, that's the important part. you don't need to be "safe", necessarily, just okay with what is not safe about what you said.

also also, every second you spend on opinions that won't make a difference is a second you should have spent on opinions that will. is what you read a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing? k good don't give it any time. even ignore my shitty opinion if you want. nothing is true; everything is permitted.

>edgy profile pic and banner

Yeah, I've been considering going for a look changeover, but I think it still needs to be shitty. I've got this new art program though, and I'm still having trouble being sufficiently shitty with it.

>border radius

People can still see it if they somehow conjure up the effort to view the shitty profile's avatar, and I'd rather not concede to bad design decisions. I'd imagine most people have changed the CSS with greasemonkey by now.

>banner too busy

How dare you, that banner is my charm point! By the way, everything in the banner WAS done up to scale, but I'd compose them over eachother. I disabled all forms of anti-aliasing, but that's just because I think AA is an atrocity in general.

>captions

In any image I've seen with a caption, they tend to detract from it so much that I avoid liking it. The meaning of an image is generally self-evident, I think, adding text is just redundant. I can see how captioning a retweet would make my account seem much, much less barren, but that just feels even scummier to me.

>noise:signal

I've been meaning to post more, but I find that I just don't have interesting thoughts all that often. It's a serious personality issue. And when I do, I can't help but think that they'd be better spent on textboards such as this.

>bio

I had none earlier, that one's just inspired by this stupid line from a book. I know it looks fucking stupid, a little more than I find fitting for even my own profile, but the moment just formed such an impression on my mind. I'll probably change it, as you suggested.

>narrow focus

This'll probably fix itself when I start to post more.

>selfie

That image is probably the only image of me that exists on the clear web, aside from that one image of my moustache on this very site. Furthermore, I probably haven't posted my name on that site. Even if it does pop up somewhere, looking it up on search engine brings up entirely unrelated things, because of a funny coincidence. As for the composition of it all, I was trying to go with a look that says "this guy looks like a total asshole" for the joke, but it doesn't really translate well. I guess people have seen others do things more ridiculous than wearing 2 sets of sunglasses while taking themselves completely seriously.

>following:followers

But I want to follow them.

>engage with your mutuals

They always ignore me, a symptom of the aforementioned issue of me being an entirely uninteresting person.

Sorry if this post was a little long.

> I'm still having trouble being sufficiently shitty with it.

Even image quality aside, do you really think it's a good idea to have jokes about 9/11 and racism? Come on.

>In any image I've seen with a caption, they tend to detract from it

I don't mean a caption on the image itself, I mean you write text in your tweet when you upload an image.

>I'd imagine most people have changed the CSS with greasemonkey by now

Most people don't use Greasemonkey on computers. And more people use mobile as opposed to computers anyway. That seems like a weird thing to contest. Your image literally has cut-off text.

>I just don't have interesting thoughts all that often

Most people don't, but many people manage to tweet more anyway. Just come up with a list of topics that you'll tweet about, and then occasionally mention something about it. Current events are an easy way to post frequently. I don't mean general current events. But whatever niche you're a part of, there's probably something going on, so you can tweet hot takes about things that happened in your circles or hobbies lately. Or puns or jokes. Or life updates, like a new job, classes you're taking, things like that. What you wrote indicates that you think tweeting is only for really impressive stuff. Guess what? People tweet about going to restaurants or drinking with people. It doesn't have to be super interesting or uncommon. People tweet about dumb shit all the time.

>I was trying to go with a look that says "this guy looks like a total asshole"

My first thought was "this guy needs to shave and get a haircut and maybe get a gym membership." No offense though.

>They always ignore me

Do you mention people? Do you DM them? Do you know them? Do you respond to their tweets? Do you have things in common with them?

Think: who is your target audience? Why do people follow you? Don't just tweet aimlessly into the void. Think about who you want to see it, why they would like it, etc. It's hard to have an audience if you don't know who you're tweeting for. You can even view Twitter analytics to see who views your stuff, like what they're interested in and all that jazz.

I didn't mean post really shitty things, just that it's more casual and you don't need a really impressive idea to post it. It's different for corporate accounts, where there's typically more effort per post, and you also schedule uploads too. But for a personal account, salience is important.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salience_(language)

It's actually fairly normal to shit blood. Usually it's hemorrhoids or an anal fissure from pooping too hard. Wouldn't hurt to talk to a doctor about it, but if it's only a little blood there's no need to freak out or go to the ER.

Don't listen to me though, listen to doctors posting shit (lol good pun rite) on the internet:
https://www.iffgd.org/symptoms-causes/alarm-symptoms.html
https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/blood-in-stool
https://www.health.com/mind-body/blood-in-poop

TL;DR: only freak out if there's a lot of blood, the blood appears to be mixed with your poop (as opposed to just on the surface) or it doesn't look fresh

The internet lets you talk with strangers about bloody poop and anal fissures. What a time to be alive.

To be fair, he probably just envisioned a web 1.0 design where people had non-interactive pages of writing and low quality GIFs and guestbooks and pretty much nothing else. And don't forget the "this site is under construction" and "best viewed with a screen resolution of 1024x768 or higher" messages. I'm glad it's gotten better over time.

But then again, imagine what tech would be like without purists like Berners-Lee or Stallman. Sure, people can make fun of them sometimes, but if the web wasn't open, and we didn't have FOSS server platforms, shit would be a whole lot worse.

Technically, the Death Grips song "No Love Deep Web" should be "No Love Dark Web." Deep web is a real thing, but it's not what they were aiming for. Any page that requires a login or isn't indexed by search engines = deep web. Tor = dark web. If they're going for the edgelord angle, it should be dark web.

deep web is boring and not that interesting

people commonly say deep web when they really mean dark web

deep web = some regular house with a lock on the door, in a regular neighborhood, nothing really interesting

dark web = secret underground crime syndicate and edgelords

not exactly, but you get the idea

death grips is edgy, which do you think they were going for?

i mean, yeah they were going for that cyberpunk vibe but aren't really tech savyy. they also thought 4chan was a cool hangout for hackers but wasn't really.

but, to be honest, i find the concept of the deep web itself a whole lot more fascinating than "the dark web". i mean, a lot of criminal shit probably gets arranged on facebook messenger and whatsapp. so it's boring and mundane but in a way so is crime.
behind locked doors, someone might be planning some weird embezzlement scheme, you never know.

992 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9117 16:50

and yes, some people are dumb enough to do criminal stuff on facebook, but they do get caught

big tech companies cooperate with law enforcement and I'm sure they flag certain keywords or even image checksums (and also image recognition via neural networks), so you're owned as soon as you post something bad, like talking about a drug deal, or posting bad images, like of drugs or weapons

you know how facebook can find faces in images and it suggests that you tag people? well image recognition can apply to other things too, not just faces, so if you post a bag of weed on messenger then it could know

maybe they don't actually do that, but I'm saying it's possible, just like how captcha knows about street signs and shit

it doesn't make sense for people to do crime on facebook when they could use Tor and whatnot instead

993 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9117 17:25

>just like how captcha knows about street signs and shit

Is it captcha that knows? I thought those things were like collaborations with relevant companies, for instance identifying the street signs, cars, bikes etc. was helping image recognition for self-driving cars and stuff. Maybe I'm wrong, but I got that idea from a few years ago when you'd get two blurry words, and one was a captcha test word and one was from an old book that OCR scanners weren't certain about, so people were indirectly helping to digitise old literature; there was a thing going round that, since the captcha test didn't actually know itself what the other word was, you could put any word and it would pass the test so people were entering "CUNTFLAPS" or something to fuck with the system XD

994 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9117 17:28

Same with when it was house numbers, at first I deliberately entered similar-looking but wrong digits because I was worried it was helping to catch crime suspects, and I am not a grass. But after a while that didn't seem to work anymore, it was more certain about what the number shown was.

995 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9117 17:39

Those are Google's captchae for its own purposes. Don't look too far into it.
