Using the internet for an average of 10 hours by day, I understand what OP and other posters here mean.
I'm clearly not a big fan of my local internet (French), which consists of all the population browsing Facebook and a billion of shitty PhpBB-style forums, with their share of 10k-messages posters, circlejerking, useless sections, shitty navigation, etc.
(The infamous Shii's article on anonymity and the internet helped me putting a word on what I disliked there.)
So I tend to spend my days browsing English websites, mostly imageboards, news, RSS feeds of blogs/others, anonymous BBS like this one, etc. (4chan, Google News/Reader, Krautchan, Reddit, Danbooru, MAL, etc).
Btw, my main motivation for learning Japanese would be to be able to read the Japanese Internet, which seems to have a rather enormous amount of interesting material.
