The Cold War, or, as some call it, the Protracted Struggle endangered all of humanity. But at the same time, it is profoundly sad to look at all the fiftysomething former Cosmonaut-Heroes-of-the-Soviet-Union-in-training who trained for their entire lives only to see everything fall apart in 1991. They will never set foot in a Soyuz capsule, none of them. What will they do with their lives now? We are told that in Russia today there is a severe social problem with widespread alcoholism. I wonder whether this sort of thing might partially explain it.
