My experience with KDE was my manager being obsessed with it around 2012-2014. Every time I had to use it was an absolute chore because the UI was so hostile. They had lots of cool ideas and fancy features and bling, but it didn't matter to me because they couldn't get the basics down.

I run Ubuntu Mate because deep in my heart I'm still convinced 10.04 with GNOME2 was the best, in the same way Snow Leopard was the best. I hear GNOME3 isn't as awful as it used to be, but I haven't been in the mood to give it a chance at any point in the last 5 years.

563 Name: ( ´_ゝ`) : 1993-09-10021 09:11

why do people describe character as "decent human being" instead of "good person"? it probably is nothing and is just a trend in language though

564 Name: ( ´_ゝ`) : 1993-09-10021 09:20

I have been told that MATE is all nostalgia, but it looks lightweight and utilitarian, I have run ubuntu mate for a bit but because of my distro hopping during my GNU/Linux phase I never really sunk my teeth into it.

GNOME is not worth the time, even with all the improvements is not worth the time solely because of the performance. Even the cute GNOME flashback is very heavy for a GNU/Linux DE.

If it's about my thought about police officers, I didn't think too much about it, gdecent human beingh is just what came to hand, but ga good personh feels a bit different from what I was trying to say, a different kind of weight idk. Now I think a bit more about it, I do see a distinction, from my experience of dealing with cops, the way they see themselves and how they talk about civilians and perps, and all the videos I've seen of how american pigs deal with unarmed criminals, innocent victims, peaceful protesters and the like, it does seem all seem pretty inhumane. It seems some of it is deliberate too, how uniforms are designed, how people are profiled for getting stopped and frisked on the street and things. It seems like the system is deliberately designed to create this dehumanising divide between gthe peopleh and gthe stateh too, and these neanderthals are employed to enforce the state's power, rather than to serve their fellow human beings. Or something, this sounds like I'm more passionate about the issue than I really am, I have mixed feelings about it. At the end of the day I just try to laugh. They're like cowboys!

>>568 lol wut no way wtf? That makes no sense

>this sounds like I'm more passionate about the issue than I really am

You're pretty passionate if you wrote a paragraph about police and the abstract system created around it in response to a simple question about a language trend.

571 Name: ( ´_ゝ`) : 1993-09-10021 12:19

It's not a language trend though, gdecent human beingh is basically a synonym for ggood personh, but I expounded on why that would be the first term that came to mind in the context, which is where the question came from. It's not that I'm passionate about the police issue but I'll admit I can be passionate about language discussion. Then again, in a current thoughts thread I can fart out a paragraph about my thoughts no problem!

I guess it's one of those things, sometimes you can read into a person's word choice to get an idea of the kind of person they are from how they convey ideas, but sometimes you're applying your own sort of linguistic bias, assuming that everyone uses language the same way, and finding things that aren't there

I often had/have this trouble with classics.
Case 1: the words and phrases that are easily judged as meaning the opposite (irony/sarcasm) by people from one decade can be confusingly ambiguous in another. The use of such is an integral part of English (in particular, but not exclusively) over the centuries, but the ways we say it are like slang that goes in and out of fashion.
Case 2: it's not always clear just from reading whether it's the character's, author's, or generation's view(s) that is causing you to question the sincerity/irony of what was stated. Like, it's so much simpler to understand someone's point if you know what else they believe and the context of those beliefs (ideologies, factions, mores).

Classical Persian poetry is full of this. A lot of factors contribute to this, but one of the biggest is poets intentionally using various ambiguities of the language as poetic devices. The introduction of Islam clashing with incompatible pre-Islamic cultural practices also adds another layer on top of that. There are bitter debates to this day over whether certain things (wine consumption) are purely metaphorical or reflective of the poet's life and habits.

> KEITH REINHARD, Chairman, DDB Worldwide: The campaign for iPod is remarkable. When I see the poster as I'm passing by, when I go on the Web site and it comes to life and I hear the music track going, and then when I put my little iPod ear-pods on and I see the white cords against my black jacket, I'm in that poster, and the poster is me! And then the music, my music, comes over my iPod, and it's a brand experience.

I think that might be illustrative enough? (The man was an marketing industry leader, not the sucker he's roleplaying.) Mass marketees really are that manipulable and make decisions on unmet emotional needs, often only coming up with a reason for it if pressed. Mass marketees really are kinda neutral to real technicals and outperforming their current spoobnumby (which is easy enough to dudge as it is). For many people today, brands replace a psychological role / timesink / money-pit that many people used to spend on religion and cheap thrills.
The quote is from when PBS put out a Frontline episode "The Persuaders" about marketing and advertising that showed those guys were way ahead of the curve on trusting in behavioral psychology. I wonder if it's a little too redpilling to be made today.
