Northern Lights (also known as The Golden Compass, if you happen to be wrong American). I'm quite certain I read other books before it, but for the life of me I can't remember them. I remember thinking it was really good, and reading both the sequels afterwards in quick succession. I saw the film when it came out, and was very annoyed that they missed out the dramatic twist at the end, which was one of the best parts of the book. Pah!
