I don't normally read military history and picked this book up for the soccer aspect, I think that might negate most of this book review. If you like military history, this book is fantastic. The writing and storytelling are sublime as well.
What I will take away from this book, and indeed what I will teach better because of this book, is the sheer devastation of whole companies of "pals battalions" as men served with friends and neighbors. This book did what books like this can do best, give names and stories to the massive casualty numbers of World War I. Giving emotions, loyalty, and life to what is often only a number adds a level of sadness and respect to the sacrifice of war.
Reading this book during the NBA, MLB, and MLS wildcat strike for police reform following the shooting of Jacob Blake gave unique insights into sports and society. The club at the center of this book Heart of Midlothian was operating in the midst of a national crisis and responded in a way they were both pressured to and also felt obligated. They played a central role in rallying to a cause. It certainly isn't a direct example, but it certainly can show the reader that sports are not divorced from society. That NBA players can no more "shut up and dribble" during a national crisis than Hearts players could "shut up and dribble" during a global one. (This comment is vulnerable to criticism from those who don't equate a national crisis on police violence against black men to a global war, and I understand that. I am writing in a moment and looking for a big connection. This is a book review on a social media post and you are free to disagree here, just a connection I made as I read this.)

That defies all sense of visible deduction and common sense. All evidence points to both species avoiding the males of one another usually, not the bear only avoiding the Tiger. Some Brown Bears even habitual steal kills from Tigers. This is proven by evidence.
If animal A is incapable of routinely fighting off animal B in a frontal confrontation, trying to make a habit of stealing their kills would go against nature’s rule of common sense. Bears for example can steal Wolf pack kills because they can routinely outlast them in scraps.
If a Bear tried that with a lion pride though, it would die. The parallels are easily realized.
Very little evidence points to Tigers taking male bears in frontal fights with any regularity. Out of the 44 “known interactions” where supposedly 50% of the bears died nowhere is it stated whether the Tiger ambushed them, if it was a male or a female or any other information needed to figure out what went down.
Common sense and knowledge of these two animals will lead you to heavily assume the Tiger had the advantage in terms of what Bears it chose to engage and which it chose not to. There’s no disputing that.
Yes, Tigers can kill bears male or female, that’s not being disputed. However to state “no record of male tigers dying to male brown Bears” is asinine and defies logic. Less formidable bears have seriously wounded/killed/chased off Tigers. Why would a Male Brownie not be able to do it even more often?
All in all I can write a novel about this but I feel I’ll fall on deaf ears. So it’s whatever. My point is you’re making a case for the Tiger that comes off as you basically going “I’m right and no matter what you post it doesn’t matter, cause I’m right.”

This is a joke! Its a complete mismatch. The Megalodon was by far the most fearsome, deadliest and most devastating beast that ever graced the face of this planet, period.
The Livyatan whale is a damn cetacean!!! And cetaceans are NO MATCH whatsoever for sharks at weight or size parity, or even at similar weights.
The Megalodon would have completely destroyed and tore apart the Livyatan whale with no problems!
Cetaceans like Orca's, Dolphins, porpoises and whales etc...have much more sensitive skin then Sharks do, which is very susceptible to FATAL DAMAGE by the Sharks jaws!

Even full-grown adult Orca's would never single-handedly go and f*ck with an adult Great white shark, because they know exactly what the shark could do to them.
Thats why when Orca pods hunt even the much smaller shark species, they do so very carefully and strategically and come in slowly, because even the Orca's know that much smaller sharks can do some serious damage with just ONE BITE!! Now imagine what an adult Great white would do.
Not only do I easily favour the Megalodon in this mismatch, but I even favour the Great white Shark in a head-on battle with an adult Orca!
Sharks just have far superior and deadlier weaponry, with far more durable and tougher skin!
Not to mention that, the Megalodon was LARGER and more powerful then the Livyatan melvillei and preyed regularly on large whales also!
It doesn't matter about the Orca's size over the Great white. The GWS has FAR SUPERIOR and deadlier weaponry and much tougher skin. The Orca, just like a Dolphin has very sensitive and soft skin which a Shark would inflict massive damage to with just one bite!
GWS easily rip off 35lbs of solid blubber from a Humpback whales body with just ONE bite! An Orca can't do that in its dreams.

The cougar is clearly the more agile predator, but the dogo is no slug and can definitely keep up the pace.
3: Speed. クソ食らえ. Moving on.
4: Light. (？；一_一) How in the name of logic is being light an advantage? If you're light, you're therefore easier to ragdoll around and thus a more vulnerable target to a dog that uses physical overpowering like the dogo. Also, where did you get that cougars are light thing from, it couldn't be any further from truth. Cougars are solidly built predators, only second to jaguars in the feline lbs/lbs strength scale.
5: Claws. Aaah, claws. Now, I'm no idiot. I know that if there's dog vs cat, there will be someone, and by someone I mean virtually everyone, who will make the argument of claws. However, are claws so, so dangerous? Yeah, we have seen them disembowel prey, but that was against vulnerable herbivores that were actively trying to move away from the cat, very big difference. Now now, I am not saying claws are not a great advantage in a fight, but I don't think it more important than overwhelming physical strength.

A solid grip is a massive must have if you're facing a grappler with only your jaws because it allows you to hold on after you manage to have a single good bite. Al you need is one good hold, and then the advantage of grappling is greatly reduced if you have the right gripping strength.
