The book The Reluctant Communist is a very DQN read. Aside from the state-sponsored GFs (and eventually wives) and the party cadres wanting said gf to have more sex with the author, it's a fascinating look into the fringes of Nork society and how more than anything, boredom is what drives disobedience there rather than ideological differences. Boredom seems to be the biggest Achilles' heel of communist society, as I have read similar things about the Soviet Union. It is also a snapshot of the early jangamadang era and the deterioration of the late Il-sung period, with civilians talking about gaming the system and such. Even party members seemed more concerned about their welfare than anything else. It surprised me that individualism shone through in people raised in a society like that, cadres no less! (Ironically, the personal gain being sought along with the surveillance and the kickbacks and privilege from the Songun policy is probably what has kept the Kim family from being overthrown by the military) The foreigners living there seemed more concerned about the rules than many party members. However, I guess that's obvious, as they would probably get punished less severely than your average citizen. It was very reflective of the human condition, as some did it for small power over people, but many were just trying to improve their lives, and some were even empathetic and friendly. This is so different because most other accounts I have read from inside the north were from natives in concentration camps. Hence, the true sadists of the party probably worked there instead of dealing with civilians. Juche is also not as far-left as it presents itself because, in practice, it's (was?) a communist monarchy more than anything, and racial purity was reportedly emphasized. It also made me understand why people, especially those in dire living conditions, get married and have children: it makes a shitty life and situation less unbearable.

More than anything, what stood out to me (aside from that, the Northern dialect of Korean phased out Chinese characters given both the proximity and the closeness of governments) was how the propaganda material stopped being propaganda after a while. People are just glad to do things like sing and savor their life milestones despite the rituals dripping in veneration for Il-sung and how similar the surveillance and propaganda the author faced are to the ones we face today in the west. Fittingly, they're privatized here, and people are far more cooperative and brainwashed, probably because they make it entertaining, and that seems to be what people seek and crave the most. This is why association football is prevalent regardless of almost every sociological factor despite often being a venue of corruption, violence, and propaganda. Maybe this oppression is just how society inherently works, and we just call it different things and hide it to various degrees.

I recommend it. It's not an account of average North Korean daily life because foreigners are essentially not allowed to mingle with regular society. Still, it's much closer than most defector books of prisons and gulags. Just be aware there's some personal life stuff in there, and it was pre-Jong-un.

Greetings DQN! Do you like philosophy? Did you know that back in the old days, Philosophy wasn't just about jacking off on the internet over old books? Philosophy was about action! That's right, philosophers were interested in figuring out how to live the good life. And what action is greater at bettering your life than buying and eating a nice, juicy, delicious McDonald's BigMac? I'm eating one right now and I'm Loving It! The more I think about it (that's what philosophers do, hehe), the more I understand - Plato would have LOVED the McDonald's Bigmac. What faster route is there to knowledge of the Forms than the wonderful flavors of the BigMac secret sauce? MMmmm, delicious! Go to McDonald's, buy a BigMac today!

Be sure to post a photograph of your McDonald's BigMac purchase to share with others what a great philosopher you are too!

Engraved on Karl Marx's tombstone are the words, "The philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways; the point, however, is to change it."
Marx demands that the intellectual class — the professors of sociology, gender studies, women's studies, journalism and so on — come out of the Ivory Tower and see themselves as creators of a new and glorious future.
How much more meaningful, exciting, and romantic to see yourself as an agent of change rather than a mere academic! Send the young people who fill up your classroom into the world with the same disgust toward middle-class values that you feel, as potential soldiers in your cause, and you've done your job. And look around, for the most part, they've succeeded. Drill into any current leftist movement: environmentalism, critical race theory, the massive expansion of the welfare state, and diversity, equity and inclusion offices at every university and major corporation, and you will find Marxism at its core: a contempt of the Enlightenment and the Judeo-Christian value system from which Capitalism springs.
Marx's most famous call to action — "workers of the world unite" — was not, of course, to the elite but to the laboring class. That didn't work out so well. Workers, especially in the United States, turned out to be more interested in refrigerators than revolutions. The only barricade they were passionate about was a white picket fence in front of a green suburban lawn. Poor benighted souls, the appeal of Marxism was somehow lost on them — maybe because they didn't go to college. But the intellectual class never lost faith. Even after Stalin, even after Mao, even after Castro wrecked Cuba, even after Pol Pot murdered millions, even after Hugo Chavez decimated Venezuela, the academic elite remained true believers. Indeed, in a world without faith, where God is dead, Marxism has become, a substitute religion, strengthened by the unyielding commitment of its followers to bear witness to it and to act on it. Marxism summons these followers to join a crusade to destroy the evil that is capitalism and to create the good that is communism.
In our secular world, the Marxist ideal gives the Marxist believer a reason to live, a reason to die, and a reason to kill. Monsters like Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Kim Il Sung, Ho Chi Minh and Pol Pot took this to the nth degree and murdered untold millions. For the record, the latter two were politically educated in France.
If you think I'm exaggerating the evils of Marxism, if you think Stalin and those other guys got communism wrong but your new "Democratic Socialism" will get it right, think again. Marx's own definition, only the path to his utopian vision of pure freedom requires the destruction—economically, politically, and morally—of every vestige of civilization as we know it. Economically, Marxism seeks to destroy free enterprise, profit-and-loss, competition, and material wealth. Politically, it seeks to destroy the rule of law, separation of powers, and freedom of speech. Morally, it seeks to destroy individualism, religion, and independent thought. And on top of this rubble it builds the all-powerful State ruled by an all-powerful elite.
This is why the Communist One Percent (the true 1 percent) must use the full power of the State to force the 99 Percent (the true 99 percent) to become something they are not and do not want to be. And if that doesn't work, the secular philosophy of brotherly love simply intimidates into silence and ultimately liquidates as much of the 99 percent as is necessary to keep everybody in line.
Censorship, secret police, and reeducation camps: these are not bugs in an imperfect system, they are features — critical parts of its design. The problem with Marxism has been and always will be MARXISM. Too bad the academic establishment has yet to figure this out. Or even worse, maybe they have.

>Workers, especially in the United States, turned out to be more interested in refrigerators than revolutions.

This is the crux of the "human nature is incompatible with communism" argument comes into play as over history people have coveted objects

>the Judeo-Christian value system from which Capitalism springs.

Which is funny because Christians belive in a social market and some like (most?) in the UK even are socialists.

What makes elephants dangerous is that they're usually found in packs. You'd be dealing with like three in a bachelor group

Rarely.

Mammals avoid it more often but it still occurs, particularly when the animal has a small population.
Notably, great apes avoid close incest and we almost certainly inherited the same mechanisms to do so https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0003347280800637
